Morning prunes,. .. .My beloved girlfrined wants to buy me a book for my birthday. In anticipation for my 747-400 job with BA I was considering either Handling the big jets or Flying the big jets, any recommendations.. .. .cheers. .. .MJR

Flying the Big Jets is a layman's guide to air transport but none the less very usefull.Handling the Big Jets is highly specialised and what virtually every pilot transitioning to jets or going for an interview reads.. .. .Either is money well spent (I have both) but get Handling the Big Jets if that is what you intend to do for a career.Just don't expect to understand it all on first reading.

Totally agree with MM.. .. .Flying the...... is a tad Janet & John, although it's good for PPL level stuff as an intro to commercial ops, but it depends on how far you are through with your training...........?

Handling The Big Jets is an in-depth, test pilot's guide to the aerodynamics, handling and systems issues affecting the first generation of wide-bodied air transport aircraft. It was written as the B747-100 was entering service, so is somewhat dated, but is a very good introduction to what's underneath the modern layer of computer interfaces. Many professional interviews will require knowledge of this book.. .Flying The Big Jets could otherwise be known as The Little Boys' Guide To Really Big Planes, and isn't really a lot of use to a commercial student.

As a preparation for a type-rating 747-400 I suggest to take a look at aerowinx.com and impactink.com. Also the Big Boeing FMC Userīs guide by Bill Bulfer seems to be quite good (only got it yesterday).

Handling the big jets is ,IMHO, a waste of time and money. Get Capt's X,Y and Z guide to your Cathay interview if you want some good gen.

openclimber I think you'll find that MJR was having a little joke when he mentioned his 'BA 747-400' rating. As this forum is for those obtaining their professional licences or first commercial job, I wouldn't expect many to be needing B744 study material.. .. .On that subject, you may notice I have deleted the post on this thread offering a copy of aerowinx software. This is not a sales and wants site, and any such posts will be binned without ceremony. Repeat offences will get a ban from Pprune.

How about a video from the intelligent video and television series? . .. .Picked up the Virgin 747-400 one yesterday (LHR to San Francisco), pretty good if you like that sort of thing, 24.95 notes from transair pilot shop, 166 mins in length. . .. .The contents involve Captain Alan Carter in the briefing room discussing route data, flight plans, siginificant weather, en route air field consideration, loading, fuel etc. Then the cameras go into the flight deck for the flight right from clerance delivery to arrival in San Francisco (making a parallel approach with a B757 on 28L .. .. .Just a thought . . . . [ 20 March 2002, 18:40: Message edited by: CAT3C AUTOLAND ]

Handling The Big Jets is an excellent publication and a very worthwhile addition to any professional pilot's bookshelf. It has been updated over a number of revisions and although now showing its age a little, the intelligent reader can gain much from its pages - particularly in understanding why current systems and procedures have developed as they have, and in appreciating the possible problems should our modern systems fail or downgrade. As an ex-airline trainer I used to recommend it to those new to the "fast and high" club.

Just a quick point ....... I've been trying to get hold of a copy of Handling the Big Jets since before Christmas - the book has been out of print for a bit now. I tried Transair and everyone but know one had a copy. The CAA are reprinting them as we speak and should be out in a couple of weeks. . .. .I've got a copy on order but I ain't going to tell you where from or i'll get banned from PPRuNe . .. .Auto

Cat3C. .The kind of videos you mention (even those featuring Alan) are certainly of interest to Wannabes, but aren't a great source of authoritative reference information. Remember, the topic in hand is the merits of Handing.. vs Flying The Big Jets. These videos equate to Flying TBJ when Handling TBJ is much more use to you.. .Autofly. .The rules of this site (which you all signed up to) do not allow advertising unless paid for. I interpret that to mean you, as a satisfied customer, are welcome to recommend to others where you can buy something, but you may not offer to sell it yourself.. .. .The post which was deleted on this thread was directly offering software for sale, and was therefore in breach of our rules. You will note that a post mentioning where to get such software is untouched. . .. .I hope that is now clear . . . . [ 23 March 2002, 17:26: Message edited by: Scroggs ]

i bought flying the big jets by stanley .... the 4th edition dealing with the 777.
i think the book is not very clearly written ....i am a layman , but i wouldn't have understood many concepts in it without the background info i've got from pprune. on the other hand , it is not likely to have any useful info for the professional pilot. even as a layman, i learn't little from it . i also think, there should be more info on the systems . these are beautiful machines with well designed systems. anyone have anything to recommend?

i would like to ask the wannabe moderator if pprune plans to have a section where people can sell their old material ? maybe call it crossfeed!
perhaps this can be done for a small fee ...or should one stick with ebay ?

i am a layman ...i would love to get my hands on information ..but cannot afford comercial prices. at the same time i do not want to break copyright law. would used software ..not copies ..be legal ..?

As far as I am aware, there are no plans to allow classified advertising on Pprune. However, once Danny gets this new software fully up and running, who knows?! It could be a way of raising a bit more revenue for the site - but it ain't gonna happen yet, folks.
