Has anyone had experience of CPL and/or IR training here. If so would you recommend it?

No experience of the school, but if it has a new addition to the training team (Capt. Bill Stewart), who I know has gone to a school at Perth, you will not get a better instructor for any type of flight training, be it single engine PPL all the way to twin I/R commercial training.

Bill was Chief Pilot at Edinburgh Air Charter and I worked there as a charter pilot until Jan '99. He was the TRI/TRE and a very professional man who had the added ability to put accross his wealth of experience in a very pleasant way. I could not recommend him highly enough.

If it's not this school that he has joined, find out which school he is now instructing at and certainly have a look at them.

Good school, great CFI (Fiona Middleton), onsite CAA examiner, brand new fixed base sim., lots of uncontrolled airspace for initial training and nearby a/p's (DND, EDI, GLA & ABZ) for proc. training.

No I don't work for them, just alongside them in a previous life

No I don't have their number but I believe they have a web site - obvious address, something like Tayflite.com or something

I'll second what Pilot Pete says about Bill Stewart. Top bloke and I dont think you could find anyone better for your IR

Great reputation for IR

Would be surprised if the actually do a CPL course as they only have twins, which would make for a very expensive option! They do 'say' that they do CPL and FI courses but in reality they don't but,... I could be wrong!

Next door to them is Tayside Aviation who do in fact do a CPL course, have a nice Arrow to do it in and also a first class reputation for CPL and FI courses but don't do IR. A combination of the two schools would be your answer.

I converted to a UK ATPL with Tayflight in 1999. I'm very happy with how I was treated.

And I, on Tinstaafl's recommendation, converted there in 2000. Great value school, landing and approach fees all included, beautifully maintained aircraft and great instruction from "Mistress Fiona".

Cheap accomodation and bar available on the field too.

BCPL at Tayside, Dundee with the Flying Spice Girl (Fiona). Excellent instructing and top class organisation. FI course with Tayside, Perth again excellent instruction.

If Fiona has anything to do with it you can bet you will be well taught. Must beat the poor quality you get from the places down south, where unfortuately I did my IR.

As for me never worked for Tayside or anyone else in that area.

Dragging this one up from the past (pprune search function)....

Would anyone out there be able to add to this thread on tayflite?

I am, like the topic starter, considering doing my CPL and IR/FI(R) with a school in Scotland. Tayflite sprang to mind, having heard good things about them in the past.

I went to Perth at the end of 1999 and did my preparation and flight checks to get my UK ATPL (I already had an Australian ATPL)

A very friendly and competent organisation and I would thoroughly recommend them. (I also went on the recommendation of Tinstafl)

And Perth (other than the weather :rolleyes: ) has a number of advantages in traffic and airspace congestion.

I was also able to stay, on the airfield, in a very reasonably priced room at the engineering school (sorry - forgotten the name).

Laurie, as previously mentioned Tayflite don't do CPL or FI courses (as far as I know) but you can do them with Tayside at Perth or (soon) Dundee. You can then go to Tayflite for the IR. If you're looking for schools in Scotland you won't do any better for two reasons 1) they are good establishments (unlike others I did work for Tayside and always visit whenever possible) and 2) there aren't any other schools in Scotland that go beyond PPL!:cool:

The courses offered by Tayflite are as follows :
The Instrument Rating (IR)
Commercial Pilots Licence (CPL(A))
Multi-Engine Class Rating (MECR)
Flight Instructor Courses (FIC), including upgrade to ME Instructor, IR Instructor, Aerobatics Instructor

However, as someone pointed out, Tayflite (no relation to Tayside Aviation incidentally) only operate Senecas, so you're likely to be much cheaper using Tayside Aviation for as much as possible like DB6 says. Unless you have very deep pockets and you want to bag lots of Seneca time of course. That said, I can't imagine that they do Aerobatics Instructor courses in a Seneca, so they may have other aircraft available.

Both are good professional organisations (I trained with Tayside, and know the people at Tayflite) and it's a great part of the world to fly in.
