View Full Version : Tailwheel Fly In Turweston 16/3/03

Flyin'Dutch'
5th Feb 2003, 19:05
Dear All

As a result of a discussion on this forum a cunning plan has been formulate to meet up on the 16/3/03 at either Turweston or Sywell.

As it is currently getting further and further buried in the Little Cubs thread I thought it would be a good idea to advertise this undertaking a bit wider, hence this thread.

Once the venue has been decided I will post a link to a Fly In page on the Hangar site.

Great stuff. I gather there is also a Cub / Auster fly-in at Old Sarum or Popham in April (not official VPAC or IAC). Anyone know more about this?

Popham events for 2003

Jodel club 13 April
Tail draggers - 11 May
De Havilland - 8 June
Canine - 13 July
Auster Fly-in - 14 September
Luscombe/Pietenpol/Autogyro Fly-in (Solent Aviation Society)

I can't make that date, away on business.
I might be able to send the Cub with another from our group.

Hopefully this will be the first of many.

Still need a strip to fly into as well, otherwise thrashing round in other people's machines is going to get v. expensive quite apart from hassle factor of training circuit traffic etc.
I suggest Shotteswell for the hooning.

LowNSlow
6th Feb 2003, 16:36
Can't make the 16th I'm afraid, 6th April (assuming the Pprune Fly-in is still on for the 5th) is the earliest I can make it.

Flyin'Dutch'
6th Feb 2003, 17:11
Nonradio,

I have no connections (well virtually none - sorry HP) at Shotteswell so I can not organise something there.

I would suggest that we meet up at one of the earlier mentioned fields in a mutual convenient time window (1100-1400?) and those who want to go on and do some further flying to other fields/strips can do so at their convenience.

Whatsay?

I will change the header because obviously all are welcome, probably best illustrated by the fact that I will turn up in a Citabria!

So is It Sywell or Turweston?

Turweston would be better for me (as it's closer!) but I don't mind either way.

What do we think...?

Kingy

Flyin'Dutch'

Kingy et al

I asked BRL to change the header and in the process decided unilaterally and undemocratic to go for Turweston.

It is a bit more central and has the option of circumnavigating the landing fee by buying fuel (40 ltrs IIRC)

Hope that meets with your approval.

Can't come - working that day - but have a good one! See you all somewhere this summer, no doubt!

Mussels at Midden Zeeland again, perhaps? Or Kippers at Kilmarnock?

You'll have to put me down for a "hopefully" for this one... Friend's birthday that weekend, not sure what his plans are yet, I'll try to convince him to celebrate on Friday night so I'm fit to fly on Sunday!

FFF

PS - I hope my monowheel counts as a tail-dragger, it's not exactly conventional. Main wheel is in front of CofG, and there's a little wheel at the back, so I guess that's good enough!

AerBabe
10th Feb 2003, 09:52
And Coventry is on your way FFF, so you could practise your hard-surface landings there, and pick up a navigator at the same time!

Kingy

Im in,

As for the free landing fee... 40X25p (the difference 'tween mogas and 100ll) = £ 10 ...dam!

Aerbabe

May have a spare seat in the Cub - my usual pax can't make it...

Kingy

FlyingForFun
10th Feb 2003, 11:19
AerBabe, my spare seat is yours for the day. (Assuming I can make it, of course...) But aren't you nearer to Cranfield than Coventry now???

QNH 1013

I should be able to bring a taildragger but has anyone checked with Turweston that we won't have to pay another fee every time we land? That was the problem with the Sywell Fly-in last year and rather limited the scope for swapping flights in each others aircraft.

AerBabe
10th Feb 2003, 12:10
Kingy - Thanks for the offer, check your PMs! :)

FFF - You're right of course... Well, currently I'm not close to anywhere. Even Welshpool and Sleap are around an hour away. :( But yes, by March I'll be much closer to Cranfield than Coventry.

QNH 1013 - Is Mrs QNH going to be able to make it this time? How is her training going?

Flyin'Dutch'

I can not make any promises at the moment but will enquire.

Have you folk all put your interest on the link to the The Hangar page.

I may be better able to wangle a reduction in wonga if there is a good turnout.

QNH 1013

Flyin'Dutch' Yes, well worth making an enquiry, and yes, I'll post my details when I know which taildragger I'll be bringing.

AerBabe, Yes, Mrs QNH should be able to come (work permitting). She completed her "safety pilot's course" in November and did most of the course in the yellow Jodel. She took the final assessment at Coventry in a Cessna and couldn't believe how easy they were to keep straight on the runway. She also found having a DI made it a lot easier to follow radar headings. D & D and Coventry Radar were super. She wrote a piece in this forum about the experience. I'm not clever enough to put the link in but it was called "How to claim on the Insurance by Mrs QNH 1013" and was posted to this forum on 4.11.02.
She's not had much chance to fly since because of work pressures, but I think she is planning on doing the RT exam next.

FlyingForFun
11th Feb 2003, 08:16
Cranfield it is then, AerBabe. Which is good, because I think it's slightly less out of the way than Coventry!

Looking likely I'll be able to make this one, but still waiting for definite confirmation.

Update on the landing fee and fuel
you have to uplift 60 ltrs not 40 ltrs im afraid to get a free ldg fee
I will see if i can arange for a deal on the landing fees with the airfield director cant promice but i will do my best.
we have kept off the grass all winter so its in good shape if you need to use it on the day .

MaxRoll Rate,

Thanks for the info. My aircraft tank is less than 60 litres so not much chance for me. It would be useful if we could pay just one landing fee for the day so that we can sample the joys of each others aircraft without breaking the bank. Sywell have done this in the past - providing you ask them in advance if you can arrange a fly-in there.

It is of course the 16/3/03.

Hope the Wx is as good this time around.

Having not been there before I dropped in on Saturday in NSOF's Cub, and what a lovely piece of grass Turweston has. Much less boggy than Sywell which even after the recent drier weather was getting really quiet churned up by the end of Saturday.

I will try to blag the club Cub or Tiger for the purpose of 16/3, but this may not be popular given weekend demand, and the syndicate Yak, in addition to having the third wheel at the wrong end, will probably be still in pieces for its annual. Anyway, I'll be there by air if possible, by car if necessary.

DamienB
19th Feb 2003, 20:10
Er... confused now! I read it as 16/2/03! And there *was* a fly-in, so...

Bleurgh. Does this mean I have to go to another one now? Tsk. The hardship.

I originally posted the following on the 5th April Pprune Flyin thread but thought it might be more appropriate here:

Was somebody looking for a Cub to buy? For the non-PFA members try +353 53 46225 (home) +353 86 816 4536 (mobile) or email [email protected]. I'm sure Mr. Wallace won't mind me lifting his numbers from his ad in Popular Flying to publicise them to a wider audience. Oh yes, it's 3600 TTSN, 1300 SMOH on an 1800 TBO. New mags, tailwires and instruments plus a recent prop. It's yellow and the chap wants £11,500. Getcha cheque books out and book a flight to the Emerald Isle BRL 'tis nothing to do with me, just spreading the word!

DamienB at least you weren't on your own mixing up the dates judging by the (excellent) pics you took :D

PS That's a lovely red Auster. Wish mine was that shiny.......

The Fly-in last Sunday was organised by the VAC. We flew in about 14.30 amid very hazy conditions.

Talking to the VAC bod who booking everyone in, there were 34 arrivals (at that stage), some of which were genuine vintage aeroplanes and others - such as the flexwings - which were welcome anyway.

Certainly a very enjoyable afternoon out, to which Damien's excellent photos certainly do justice.

Don't know whether we'll make it to the next one yet.

An update.

We (well MRR) are working on the landing fee issue at Turweston at the moment.

For the first landing you can bring your voucher anyway.

The link to the booking page is duff at the moment but should be up and running again shortly (change of server).

As soon as I know more about either I will be back.

If teh weather is as good in 2 weeks as it is now, we'll be laughing.

PS: Just edited the link and it is working again now so get your name on there.

Quite amazing, FD. I somehow missed this thread and checked today 'on the off chance' if SL was available (I already had her booked 11 till 2). Very unusually (we are a big group, so weekends get booked!) no-one else had her booked, so I extended my booking to 'all day'.

Due to the fact that one of my Dutch flying mates is not very well I will not be able to attend myself at Turdy on Sunday. I will go this weekend to visit him.

Sorry I won't have a chance to meet you on Sunday, but hope your friend turns out ok. Did you manage to sort out anything re the multiple-landings-with-one-fee idea so we can swop rides in each others a/c? I assume the operators at Turweston know they're hosting a pprune fly-in on Sunday?

Have a good trip and hope to meet you at a future fly-in.

Thanks for your kind post.

To answer your questions:

1. Yes they know there is going to be a gathering
2. I did speak to Max Roll Rate and he was going to discuss it with the management. Not heard anything back yet, dont forget that you can use the Flyer voucher for at least one landing and buying fuel gives a further discount.

Hope the weather will be fine.

Many thanks.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed for the weather and < 15 knots cross-wind unless we can land on the grass. Now it looks like I'll be bringing the yellow 65hp Jodel, and may (yet to be confirmed) have a spare seat from EGNF or EGBM. Has anyone worked out how many taildraggers we are now expecting?
