Have you applied for this "cadetship"? . .Sounds alrightish what have you got to lose? Looks like you might be a bit of a skivvy or working in the tower (i can't think what the air law exam is for and why it seems so important?) I am interested to see how this develops, it will be a very nice opportunity for someone who likes aeroplanes and flying.. . Keep me informed.

Thought this was a bit too good to be true - not as "Free" as advertised. Well, here ends my application for this one!

Does the National Minimum Wage (NMW) apply here?. .I am not an expert on the NMW, but my thoughts & queries are as follows:-. .Just because work is described as "work experience" does not automatically make it exempt from the regulations on NMW. Work Experience that is exempt from the NMW, is usually short periods of a few weeks that are linked to an educational course at a school or college.. .6 months work on a five day week of about 40 odd hours/week would come to about £4,500. benefits in kind, such as "free" flight training cannot be deducted before calculating the NMW payable to the worker. Nor can "free" accommodation when the employer dictates the place of work.. .Does anyone out there understand the NMW regulations, or can shed any light on this matter?

Have you looked at the Private Flying forum thread "Goings on at Caenarfon" ? . .It looks as if all may not be well there according to reports copied from a local newspaper.

I cant see them giving 8hours! If you allowed £100/Hr for an aircraft and instructor you would be on the equivalent of £800/wk!. .. .Sounds like one to stay away from especially after reading the other thread..... .. .Julian.

Well, as they are only giving a JAR 45 hour PPL, that works out at 1.73 hours per week over the 26 weeks. So, at £100 per hour costs, equals a salary sacrifice of only £173 per week.. .Questions:-. .Who bears the cost if the student takes more than 45 hours to get a PPL?. .If the "flight experience" day only averages 1.73 hours airborne, is the rest of the day made up of other aircraft related activities, such as manning the refuelling pumps, washing aircraft etc?. .

MIGHT be a genuine scheme but proceed with . .caution.. .. .All the previous posts contain valid comments.. .I think charging £15 for an Air Law exam is a bit rich, particually if you've already passed it.. .. .Selection process sounds a bit like Initial Officer Selection, polls and barrels across lakes, building team work! etc. Yawn!. .. .More seriously though, I call 1-2 WEEKS work experience, not 6 months and I suspect it might be 6 months cheap labour through the summer schedules. Maybe the National Minimum Wage should apply, I wonder if the Revenue/National Insurance guys are aware.. .Remember Sandwich Undergraduates will be paid during their year in industry, why shouldn't you?. .. .When is the flying going to actually happen, during or at the end? I don't like phrases like "Satisfactory Standard" has been known for people near the end of schemes like this all of a sudden to become "Unsatisfactory", no refund & no more flying ??. .. .Tread carefully.

It just occured to me that the Air Law exam is only valid for 6 months (hence £30 instead of £15), therefore you do it once at selection, then again at a future point in time - say a month in - and have 6 months to complete the skills test. What if you need extra time to train, as the exams will all be invalidated if you overrun this period.. .. .SCAM SCAM SCAM.. .. .Steer clear.. . . . [ 13 March 2002, 18:38: Message edited by: Lucifer ]
