Am currently converting onto the 767 from the 744 and have done a few ETOPS days in ground school. There I was told the only reason some of our twins aren't approved higher than 120 minutes ETOPS (some of our a/c have 180 mins) is because of the time limitation of the cargo fire suppression. From memory, the 744 (ours anyway) has 195 mins cargo fire suppression capability yet there are times I have find myself over 2000 miles from an airport (say 240 minutes away - being generous) and there are no operating restrictions for the 744 or any other quad/trijet.

Surely if we are applying a route distance limitation for the reason of cargo fire suppression to twins we should apply it to other aircraft?

From a practical standpoint, what do you think (no ETOPS theory drivel pls!)?

I think that you will find that the regulatory authorities are starting to agree with you. There are talks about imposing ETOPS restrictions on Tri/Quads especially in relation to fire suppression.
