View Full Version : Accomodation at Oxford/Cranfield?

Hello!

I am intending to go out and get a ridiculously large bank loan and get myself on an integrated course at Cabair or OATS later this year to achieve my lifelong ambition to fly large aluminium tubes. I have done a lot of research into the costs and in order to keep them at a reasonable value I would like to know if i could still live at home in Leicester and commute or is it a requirement that you live on campus?

Also, any advice anyone has got for me would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks

ES,

Hi, I'm currently at OATS and used to reside in sunny Nottingham and believe me you dont want to even consider commuting!

Several off my course live in London and do that commute and it is beginning to take its toll.

Its not compulsary to live "on campus" but I think you will find it a lot easier to live withing a reasonable distance.

Living costs vary depending on what/where/how you want to live, but if you want more info on the Oxford area mail me at [email protected]

Good luck

TBL

If you go to OATS, then there is a local economy booming in B & B's set up just for OATS. It will cost you between 10 and 17 quid a nite, for this princlie sum you will get B&B plus evening meal plus all laundry.
The commute is hell, don't bother, plus the work load is massive for the groundschool, so you will need all the time you can get to study!
Good luck

Live on campus if you can. The rush hour traffic in Kidlington is fairly hellish(like most places I guess) You will need every ounce of mental energy to do the course anyway and despite the fact Cherwell is a bit of a dump it's good to be as central as possible I think, even for things like being a one minute walk away from Ops to look at tommorrows Wx, NOTAM's or A/C allocation, in the evening.(I apologize if Cherwell has been improved since the late 90's!) I don't know about Cabair, but perhaps the same thing applies.
Enjoy!

If you are looking for somewhere in the OATS-area, look no further than Woodstock. Lovely little town with everything you need within cycling distance of Kidlington Airport.

Thanks guys!!

I am swaying more towards Cabair so details of commuting/accomodation there would be of use.

One thing I notice about all u wannabes is that you don't half stick together and help each other!! Look forward to getting some replies when i am trying to make sense of that theory??

Look forward to hearing from u JB007!

Accomodation at Cranfield is very reasonable. What are you looking for? A house, a flat, a room? Ask and you shall receive! [email protected]

Kraken,

Do you mind if I mail you too? I'm most likely starting at Cabair in summer. Interested to find out some associated costs of alternative accomodation ie not one of the (expensive) halls.

Electric Sky - When are you hoping to start?

Cheers, JT8

Hopefully autumn time for me. I have applied to go on the Feb 2nd seminar, awaiting confirmation from Cabair. Maybe shout you a pint afterwards if you are there.

Go to OATS. I left in July and managed to get a job flying B757/767 within two months. Don't believe what they say about helping you find a job, it is complete horse s**t!! As far as I can tell from my course, the people who were recommended didn't get jobs and the people who weren't, did.Forget Cabair I have heard quite a few things about them. Maybe consider BAe systems, had a couple of friends who went there, one got a job with loganair and the other got a job with the airline I landed a job with.

Accomodation - for the first couple of months use the school's accomodation. Definately do not take an Upper Heyford bungalow - they are revolting and you feel like you're in a prison camp. Stay in Langford and then get some mates and rent a place in Woodstock. I was paying £250 p/m which is about right. Or you can rent a room, look in the window of the newsagents next to the co op. Woodstock is the place to be as kidlington's traffic is awful. The pubs in woodstock are a good laugh and normally there are quite a lot of ladies around.

Enjoy the course and remember how much you are spending and you'll do well.

CSDU,

Well done on your job with Brits (It is Britannia I assume). I would like to do an integrated course - after weighing up the modular vs integrated arguament for the last few months. I would much prefer to do it in the UK - leaving me with OATS or Cabair. Cabairs a lot cheaper, hence why its currently my choice. Having said that, I have seen, and in some ways have been more impressed with some smaller schools offering the CPL and IR modules.

Please let me know here if possible, any feedback you have on Cabair (I've done a good search here on pprune btw).

Electric Sky - Sorry to hijack your thread mate! I arranged a visit to Cabair last week so won't be at the seminar. Hold on to that offer for a pint though <img src="wink.gif" border="0">
