I am in the initial stages of considering upping sticks from the UK, leaving the World's Favourite Airline and plying my trade elsewhere.

So far I am considering Emirates, Air Canada and Cathay should they ever sort out the 49ers.

Can someone give me information on salary scales for Air Canada (I guess they're the best employers in Canada) work patterns, time to P2 long haul and also time to command.

I've looked at the Air Canada web site, Government immigration site and this forum for info so far.

Also can someone tell me the average tax burden?
Price of property in the Vancouver area?

A lot of requests I know, but will be grateful of any scraps of information/opinion.

By the way, I have 3200 hrs Total Time, 3000 hrs B757/767, University degree and aged 27.

Cheers

All I can recommand is to post your question on www.canadianaviation.com

The Canadian market is VERY depressed at the moment but you might get a more precise answer from more knowledgeable folks.

Good luck,

Bronco, Since it would seem that you were able to find work co-piloting B757s and B767s after logging only 200 hours time , I doubt whether anyone on this site is in a position to give you career advice! :D What is the secret of your success?

I was fortunate in being sponsored by a "Major" (hint The World's Favourite) to do an ab-intio program that led straight into the RHS of a B757. I have recently completed my 5 year bond and so can leave and do as I wish. To be honest I'm just a bit fed up with life in the UK at the moment - high taxes, spiralling property prices, poor pay/conditions and constant rain. I apologise if this makes me sound like a whinger but 'tis the way; I have a skill that can be plied anywhere in the World so I'm having a look around.

Cheers

Hello - I am in the "kind of" same position in the way that Im "sticks up" and out of this UK place. However, I'm only 18! I am glad I have come to the realisation that UK is not the place to be for the reasons you mentioned, and more. I am not as fortunate as you , sir, with the sponsorship etc, however, am working for CPL and Instructors rating, to work in Canada in 2004. The Canadian PPRuNe population are correct in saying that the industry is at a low at the moment, as I have been in touch with some, as well as numerous flying schools and one Air Canada Pilot who gave me a flight jumpseat back in 99 from KSFO to CYYZ (where I shall be living), and besides the low market, there ARE jobs.

The pilots who are already qulified, are mainly, so i have been told, after the big time jobs, such as yourself, and not after the lesser, such as tour flying, or bush flying, or being a flight instructor such as myself soon. I have had some "offers" or "interest" should I say, so not all is lost :)

Its not all dead as most will agree, but I suppose at your level, things are different.

If you like, email me at [email protected] and I shall pass on some information that will be of use to you. Or Private message me.

Good luck, and see you there ;)

Smooth skies,
Dan :D

You folks do realize that if, or when, you were hired at Air Canada you would be at the bottom of the seniority list. Once you've been where some of you have been, do you really want to "start at the bottom"?

And as I am just finding out seniority means everything at Air Canada, even more than expierence and qualifications.

I have a Canadian ATPL - B737/747 experience and in a year have not even been invited to an interview. You need internal references as an immigrant, so unless you know someone, be forewarned.

There are many VERY experienced Canadian pilots looking for work - so the immigrants come a very distant second on the list, and rightly so. Think twice before leaving the UK.

The grass is not always greener on the other side (but I personally love Canada, and am enjoying flying a C152 - hopefully as an instructor soon!)

Bronco,

I've heard Vietnam Airlines are looking for 767 type rated guys and the money is good and lifestyle cheap. You'd be able to wave that gun around of yours with impunity and prey on those local wenches. Seems tailor made for you mate !!!!!

Mr Junk

How are things working for Air America? I trust that you've found some suitable establishment of ill repute and turned it into your local crew room! Where are you these days? Angola, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, Columbia, Cambodia? Or have your paymasters sworn you to secrecy? Anyway good luck wherever you are, I'd love to join you but prefer the lighter shade of operations as opposed to the shady side.

Adios

BB

Ive decided to take my chance in Khartoom. Apparently the life expectancy of a white man down town who can't speak Arabic is 27 minutes and most of that time is used in assembling a death squad ! I like a gamble.

Come over to the dark side my friend and use the force !

Looks like Ac is going to be in trouble with the amount of debt which it will need to start paying off this summer. I hear West Jet is standing in the wings getting ready to move in as soon as it can.

:(Hi guys,
I just wanted to add my 2 cents worth here:
I have been working in Canada for the last 15 years. I have been through numerous bankruptcies (it started with Nationair 10 years ago). My advice to anyone wanting to come to Canada as an airline pilot is DON'T! Aviation is here is a dog and pony show and pickings are slim. Air Canada will probably go bankrupt in the next 12-18 months (but the government will surely help them out). As for the rest of them, a few charter companies here and there and that's about it. Most are" fly by night operations" with maybe one exception. Westjet doesn't pay hardly anything and the employee is forced to buy there soon to be worthless dogsh$t stock. It certainly is a rash mockery. What else can I say other than Canada is a beautifull country and I do want to live here. Making a living in this business, however, sucks!

I've yet to visit Canada myself but have relatives and friends who've emmigrated there over the last 13 years - they all love it and would never return to their various countries of birth. I'm due to go on vacation in BC in spring and hope I don't like the place too much as the general gist (from this and other forums) is that the flying is financially unrewarding. This is probably down to supply and demand, like anything in a free market - just to let you know that their is a shortage of skilled manual labour here in London and plumbers earn £75k per annum apparently. Can anyone recommend a good tech college?

As BA are about to hire again might I suggest that they would be a much better choice and opportunity for you than anything you'd ever hope to find in the (cleverly disguised) Socialist Ditatorship of Canada. ;)

You will have gathered by now, from the posts above, that Canada is definitely a poor career choice and move under the present conditions.

What, otherwise, can I tell you when I have three ATPLs, 11,000 plus hours (over 4,000 widebody) Int'l experience with 5 type ratings and I'm finding it next to impossible to get a job in this country, (maybe it's me?) not to mention the fact that Air Canada is facing serious bankruptcy possibilities, Air Canada Jazz are facing extinction and about to lay off 100 plus pilots. West Jet are finally getting some competition that is sure to damage it's rose coloured world.

...and there are hundreds more in this country with similar experience and qualifications as myself who are also not working! So...

Do the math my friend. If any of that happens...wheralfuct! :(

Sorry about that but I wish you luck ;)

On Jan.24th Air Canada's 100% owned regional, AC Jazz, issued a layoff bid of 105 pilots(80 downgrades). This Monday, AC has a news conference scheduled. What the topis is is anyones guess. However, their fourth qtr was a loss. They currently show a bid requiring 65 new hires(All rj positions). Will they hire 65...my guess no. They will be lucky not to have layoff's.

BB, I would recommend to come visit and have a good time. I grew up in BC. Awesome place to visit and to live. Lots to do and see. If you can, make sure you get to the Okanagan valley which is 250 miles east of Vancouver. As far as work is concerned...it'll be a tough go.
