Hello. . . . How many of the exam questions are PNR/CP calculations and are they single or multi leg problems. If you have taken the exam what are the important points to brush up on and did you feel you had enough time. . . Im currently studying the PNR/CP chapters and I am finding it a right pain in the arse.. . Any advice welcome.

Took my exams a few months ago but from what I recall there was no more than 2 or 3 PNR questions and definitely no multi leg questions I believe they are not in the JAR syllabus - only in the old CAA exams. . .With regard to the rest of the exam about half the questions use charts - this is where most people lose time. The best method is to use one chart at a time and complete all questions using that chart before moving to another chart. This saves countless minutes of folding/unfolding.. .About a third of the Q's come out of the CAP manual provided - these can be very time consuming and I personally did them first because they were worth the most marks.. .The remaining questions ask about chart symbols and filling in the flight plan. Almost without exception the answers to these are right in front of you in the JEP manual.. .Best of luck, hope this helps.

yeah i'd agree with the above . .only a few pnr type questions , a few time questions ,e.g "if u took off at los angeles at 1000 LMT and were bound for london , if the flight time was 11H 40 M , what time GMT did u arrive?", . .there can be a few weird tricky ones , but for the most part just STOP AND THINK (albeit quickly) . .there werent that many CAP609 questions in my exam but they were worth a few marks alright , so know how to use those graphs , . .and if u have your jeppy marked with some prominent places , it speeds up finding places no end (although we did have some good tips )

as obvious as it may seem , get up to speed on your CRaP 5 wheel or whatever u use , cos time lost there is invaluable, there may be quite a few questions involving that . .

thats about all i can remember . .good luck

Hello

Thanks for the information chaps. You mention that you put some marks on your route manual maps, I take it this means that you take your own personal student route manual into the exam ?. . . You gave some excellent advice/info on the planning exam , I dont suppose you could do the same for the General Navigation exam ,please.. . . .Ta. . Hoodwink.

Some FACTS regarding the Flight Planning Exam.. .3 Hours about 60-65 questions in total.

If you know what you are doing with Jeppe; CAP697,. .CRP5 etc. this time is NOT a problem.. .Practice is ESSENTIAL don't learn the answers,. .as they often change the parameters to the questions.. .Germans wrote the paper so expect Europe, Amsterdam, Munich, London & Zurich.

If you are wondering where to find Mach No or where to find Paris in the Jeppe. Manual.. .DING DING Times up.

About 30% of exam is using YOUR OWN Student Jeppesen Flight Manual. . .You must know your way around this.. .The same goes for your CAP697.. .The exam assumes that most of your career you going to be flying jet aircraft on airways.

Regarding your original question of PNR/CP.. .Sometimes called PSR/PET they are single leg. .Don't waste time looking at multi leg you've got better things to do.

PSR/PET are usually weighted at 2-3 marks each. .with about 3 questions per exam.. .Might well have to use your CRP5 for TAS & G/S etc. to answer the question.

Best of luck.

On another thread Flypuppy said that they were confiscating the Jepps for the Flight Planning exam???

I mean, your OWN one.. i.e. marking your copy in prominent places is pointless maybe??

I am told by a number of people that sat the Flight Planning exam at Silsoe in February that during the exam people's Jepp manuals were inspected and if any marks were found people would be removed from that sitting. Some peoples manuals, I believe about 4, were taken at random and replaced by a manual provided by the CAA invigilator.

One of the invigilators also mentioned to a candidate that the CAA were going to slowly increase the difficulty of the exams "to make the UK system the best in the world again". kind of makes a mockery of having a unified exam system really.

It has always been the case that the Jepp manuals and charts you take in to the FP and General Nav exam should be unmarked. If you mark them with any intent to cheat and get rumbled the invigilators will bounce you out of the exam.

The CAA can't make the exams more difficult than they are. The questions come from the JAA Central Question Bank and they are not allowed to change them, apart from translating them into more comprehensible English.

There is nothing wrong with highlighting though...

And of course remember that as long as you have your own Jeppy it is very handy for getting feedback questions out of the exam for the poor sods who sit it after you . .As has been said, it is all about practice, practice, practice - there really isn't that much to learn and you do get plenty of time in the exam providing you have done plenty of practice.

[smug mode] I was quite pleased with my 100% :) [/smug mode]

SFT had a student who failed this twice, then achieved 98% after walking out and realising he'd made an error (i.e. potentialy 100%). His advice? Know the CAP and the Jepp backwards. Know exactly what's in there and where it is. That is what he realised after his second sitting. I would agree.

Cheating is pointless - just not necessary. Bringing out feedback - well that would not be a bad idea :)

Talking of feedback, here are some notes I made after my flight planning exam last August. Hope it is of use !!!!!. .. .Flight Planning. .===============. .. .2 questions on ED6. .. .– Bearing and distance between Ammerbuch (N48 32 E 008 57) & EDNE. .– Freq of Grenchen either VORDME or NDB (cant remember which). .. .If the initial great circle track from A (N 80 E 170) to B (N 75 E 011) is 177 (G) what is the grid track at B ?. .(you were also told that chart 5 at(hi) may help). .- 172 (G). .- 194 (G). .- 177 (G). .- 353 (G). .. .On E (hi)4 . You are flying from ERL (N 49 39 E 011 09) to FFM (N 50 03 E 008 38) on UG 1 , what FL should you use ?. .- FL 310. .- FL 320. .- FL 390. .- FL 300. .. .On E (hi)4.
