Taiwan's China Air to buy Boeing, Airbus jets
Friday October 4, 10:04 pm ET
TAIPEI, Oct 5 (Reuters) - Taiwan's China Airlines (Taiwan:2610.TW - News), the island's largest carrier, has decided to buy 10 747-400s from Boeing Co (NYSE:BA - News) and 12 Airbus A330-300s in a deal estimated at about US$4 billion, local newspapers reported on Saturday.
The Economic Daily News quoted Transport Minister Lin Lin-san as saying an exact value for the jet purchases will be disclosed when China Airlines, 71 percent owned by a state-controlled foundation, signs the deal.
Government and airline officials were not immediately available for comment.
China Airlines had said it was inclined to buy Boeing's 747-400 planes to replace its long-haul fleet. It is also considering a separate plan to replace its 12 medium-range Airbus A300-600Rs.
The company said this year it planned to buy 12 jets from either Airbus, which is majority owned by European Aeronautic Defence & Space Co NV (Paris:EAD.PA - News; XETRA:EAD.DE - News), or Boeing, to replace ageing A300-600Rs and to simplify its fleet.
China Airlines has said it expects to make a decision by the end of the year, but declined to say if the decision to buy long-haul jets would be announced simultaneously.
The average age of China Airlines' fleet of 55 planes is six years, but the A300-600Rs are nine years old. (US$=T$35)
