View Full Version : London Marathon - PPRuNe Fund Sponsorship Opportunity!

Blindside
21st Feb 2002, 23:07
Hello All

I am running in the London Marathon on Sunday 14th April. No easy task, particularly as I’m not built for speed at 6ft 3” and 16 stone.

To make it easier, I will run the 26.3 miles with a plane made out of wooden spoons on my head (I am also raising money for the Wooden Spoon charity). This will also help with identification.

Seeing as how PPRuNe has given something back to all wannabes in the form of seminars and the new cadet scheme, I thought that the marathon would be an ideal opportunity to raise money for the PPRuNe fund via your potentially generous sponsorship.

The idea is to raise money via sponsorship from you guys that will go directly to the PPRuNe fund – a fund that all of us may benefit from in the future.

This website is free, many people work extremely hard to keep the site running, this is a chance for all of you to contribute a little (or a little more) to keep me running. Plus you all have the satisfaction of getting a pound of flesh for your donation.. . . .I’ll post photos of my run after the event as proof, and I may keep you up to date with my lack of training progress. I’m aiming (hoping) to get round in 4 - 4 1/2 hours.

This scheme has the backing of IFR and I hope will raise a significant amount. If you are interested in sponsoring me then please add a message below.

We will work out the logistics of collecting any monies later on. A little from a lot of people will soon add up.

I’m off to Vaseline myself up, do I hear a tenner?

Very best regards

Blindside

I'll give you a quid a mile, Blindside. Sorry it's not more, but not too wealthy right now. Send me an E-mail, and I'll tell you where to send the boys if I don't pay up

Thanks for getting the ball rolling Evo7, £1 a mile is more than generous.

The response is a little disappointing so far, especially considering there were 160+ applicants for the cadet scheme and the site has approximately 44000 free users.

Here's a chance to give a little rather than taking!

Thanks again

Best regards

Sadly due to financial crisis atm I can only shout a tenner.

But if it changes prior to the marathon then it will rise

Good luck, train hard, what time are u aiming for or is it a case of getting round?

Can't wait for piccies

Well if ADG, who right now is on a freezing-cold & snowy stopover in Moscow, can prise open his wallet far enough to find £30 then I'm sure that I can too - so count me in for the same amount !

Ps. I too will soon be looking for some of the same for this years London-to-Brighton Bike Ride sponsorship - albeit that it'll have to be donated to the Heart Foundation ( a very worthy cause, especially so as heart disease is a huge killer amongst the male of our species ).. .Our team, which includes me, Danny ( though he doesn't know it yet - whoops, but now he does ! ), plus various other PPRuNe Admins & Moderators, e.g. Hamrah, and most of the Astraeus directors will be sporting quite jaunty tee-shirts with PPRuNe logos on them.. .Uhm, I wonder if we should put together a PPRuNe cycle team - now there's an idea ?!

With Sagey increasing to £15, that makes £216 so far.

Come on, let's not rely on those who already give up their spare time to run the bloody site.

A tenner from every wannabe would make a very large total. I don't care how large your debts are everyone can spare a tenner. You will save yourself a hundred times that amount from using the free info that you get on PPRuNe.

Long pockets - short arms??

I'm putting this back to the top - for all you who ignore the gallantry of this man 'Blindside'. Come on now! Would YOU run the London Marathon? I know I wouldn't even if I could. I have seen the agony and the ectasy, his will be no different so let us show a little support.

Whatever you bid will be gratefully received.

Hello Blindside,. .I think what you're doing is excellent, I too will be running the Marathon on April 14 and collecting for a small local charity, however my main reason is because i love distance running and i am well seasoned to it. You however, point out that its boring sometimes which means that this is real hard work for you, most people will never know how much work goes in to marathon training,i guess this will be your first marathon.... I wish you the very best of luck on the day,..Cheers, 26point2.. .(we don't need to sponsor each other do we?, we're doing our bit!!!)

Not sure how this works for the PPRUNE side of things (whether they'd need to be a registered charity?? I don't know). This site lets you set up a website for all your sponsors to pledge thier money - with their credit cards. Also it has the added bonus of donating an extra 28p for every pound pledged as they site automatically cliams the tax back.

Check it out and let me know how you go!

Jacko, we are not a registered charity so we cannot do it. As we are is fine until something else is arranged - but there is nothing planned for the near future.

So, are there more people to give support to Blindside in his Marathon run? I would love to see it up to a £1000 - that would be terrific.

Go for it, go on!

Good luck Rob.

cheers for the support - moral and financial.

It's going to be an absolute nightmare as I knackered my back 3 weeks ago and was unable to train for 2 weeks and I've not wanted to risk damaging it by running this week. So I'm about 1/2 a stone heavier than I wanted to be and nowhere near as fit. Oh dear.

The plan is to get to Tower Bridge (13 miles) and hang on, whilst feeling very sorry for myself.

Pass me the bananas.

Never again.

I'll definitely lose 6 toe nails, maybe more. My feet look like they've got frostbite.

Despite being well beaten by Charlie Dimmock and finishing 2 1/2 hrs behind Paula Radcliffe, I am dead chuffed with my time.

The spilt times are shown below (please take into consideration that I am at least 16 stone and addicted to chicken bhunas). Also, I couldn't train for the 3 weeks prior to the race due to a back injury.

I was going well until 21/22 miles, averaging 10 minute mile pace, then the wheels fell off in spectacular style. My hips went which caused me huge problems and my calves went into spasm, so I basically crawled the last 5 miles, crossing the line with the doctor out of Eastenders (so I've been told).

Further confirmation can be found at london-marathon.co.uk or in the Times tomorrow. I'll post the official photos when they arrive in the mail. Incidentally, I did get on the telly behind a fella dressed as Spiderman on Tower Bridge - my mother was very impressed.

I'm sure that IFR will spend the money wisely, thanks for the support.

Could all the generous sponsors please:

SEND YOUR CHEQUE FOR THE APPROPRIATE AMOUNT - MADE OUT TO THE PPRuNe FUND AND SEND TO: IFR, 5 STATION APPROACH, BELMONT, SURREY SM2 6BW.

Please include your PPRuNe name somewhere in the envelope so that IFR knows who has paid.

I'll email all the sponsors to doubly ensure they get all the details.

Of course, if anybody else wishes to donate they are more than welcome to.

cheers again.
