SIA preparing to enter Aussie domestic market:

SYDNEY - A Singapore Airlines-backed consortium is preparing to enter the lucrative but failure-strewn Australian domestic aviation market, a Sydney newspaper reported today.

The Sunday Telegraph said Singapore Airlines (SIA) would underwrite the new airline, which aims to be flying by Christmas.

The move would challenge Qantas, which now has about 80 per cent of the domestic market following the collapse of Ansett last year, and Virgin Blue, the successful discount carrier launched by British tycoon Sir Richard Branson in 2000.

Since the collapse of Air New Zealand-owned Ansett, the Star Alliance group of airlines, including SIA, has lacked a presence in the Australian domestic market, denting its tourist numbers.

A spokesman for SIA told the newspaper the company was "keeping its domestic options open" and was not ruling out any proposals.

The newspaper quoted an industry source as saying plans for the safety certificate needed to operate in Australian skies was well advanced.

"These guys have their paperwork ready to go, they can be in the air by Christmas," he said.

The new airline, which is yet to be named, would initially fly new Boeing and Airbus jets on the Sydney-Melbourne, Sydney-Brisbane routes, with some additional Canberra services.

Later expansion plans include Perth and Adelaide, the newspaper reported.

A vital consideration is understood to be the old Ansett terminal in Sydney airport, with SIA worried it will be frozen out if Qantas and Virgin Blue occupy the bulk of the facility.

"We are sending a strong signal that while we might be able to get the planes and the passengers, you've got to have somewhere to park your planes," the SIA spokesman said.

Could the long wait be finally be over ?

It will be interesting to see where they get their crew from. I was under the impression that Australian Airlines was going to do domestic as well. If the SIA plan goes ahead then this means we will be back to 4 airlines in the domestic market. Mmmm interesting..... :p

At the Geoff Dixon roadshow he stated that Australian will not compete against QF. It is doing OOL-CNS (which QF don't do at the moment) but it's for international pax anyway.

If this airline gets up it will do it tuff with the unions. SIA are famous for setting low wages for the crew they employ. FAAA will set a minimum wage that will be tuff for outside airlines to work with. QF & VB will be plenty to service a country with 20 million people. If a new airline starts it must be on a level playing field with our local company's, no special tax deals or we will have another Ansett case for two Australian company's that employ 38,000 people between them.

Nice thought.
But would SIA be willing to go head-to-head with Virgin Blue, considering that SQ already owns 49% of Virgin Atlantic.

Conflict of interest surely. I would imagine that a joint co-operation with VBlue and SIA's proposed start-up would be a more logical explanation.

The problem with a VB and a SIA joint venture is a difference in business models.
SIA are looking for a full service airline to fill the gap in the STAR Alliance network.(Also other STAR Partners especially United are hurting from the lack of a full service option).
Where as VB is committed to a low cost business model,eg no business class,no business lounge's, a pay as you go cabin service and a reluctance to join a frequent flyer program.
I'm sure SIA have pursued that option of of a joint venture ( it certainly would have been a lot cheaper !!!)
Media reports suggest that relations between Branson and SIA have been a little cold of late.
Maybe their entry into Oz has stepped on a few toes !
Time will tell, we have been hearing stories for years that the Singaporeans have been coming. However this time there seems to be a lot more evidence, Sydney Airports is deciding today who gets what gates in the old Ansett Terminal. Maybe there will be an announcement that a unnamed airline has secured some gates.
Patience !!:)
