Wow.
How does this slip through the CAA's vetting of staff?

Happened here too in Oz, though not quite the same - a Flying Operations Inspector who had worked in PNG CAA came to Oz in the early 80s, and was testing pilots for their instructor ratings in Sydney. He was failing a few. A little research showed that he did not hold an instructor rating himself. CAA told him to get a rating, but he knew that if he went to any of the Sydney schools (in those days there were quite a few) he would get a very hard time. He went to QLD where he was unknown.

But in this Un Zid case, the people who assessed Jones in the interview should be shot for not researching him properly.

Certainly didn't endear himself to many with the way he operated. Karma perhaps.

And this within an organisation which insists on Fit and Proper Person interviews for nearly every role those of us in the industry, and who have been there and done that and often well known to CAA officers, wish to take on. I find it odd that the person interviewing us for this has probably never been assessed as a FPP themselves!

Don't do as I do, do as I say.......

The way of the regulators unfortunately.

He turns out to be ex-AAC (UK) who was a door-gunner turned pilot and reknowned for being a serial bullsh*tter.

He will have had no experience of flying the Wessex and is hardly a subject matter expert to be relied on by the NZCAA.

Shocking that he fooled so many in such an important role.

Similar happening in a certain slightly uncomfortable middle eastern country where an antipodean is FOI but has absolutely zero commercial experience. Supposedly claimed to have helped introduce Ops3 to a European country on his CV.

Not sure what you're all moaning about. In Africa you only need to have seen a photo of an aircraft to qualify you for working at a regulator :E

Certainly wasn't backward in telling all of his achievements. Not surprised really that he's not all he claimed.
Not the first to be recruited into a nz government agency and later caught out . Wonder how he actually maintains residence here now. Do immigrants need to fill in a "fit and proper" person form?

Bell Ringer......I am thinking some of the FAA Inspectors on the Helicopter Side of the House could fall into that category.

How many NZ CAA folks got fired over this?

Gross failure's by many....but shall we see them clean house over it?

"In 2013, Jones taught at the CTC Aviation school as an ATPL instructor when he did not have the qualification either. CTC, which is part of an international aviation training company, said the licence was not a prerequisite to teach the course."

Does this mean that his former students at CTC are not legally qualified?

Not necessarily, the quality control is down to the school.

If his students passed the exams then that is the defining qualification - just because he hadn't done so should be irrelevant since he wasn't the examiner.

I presume everyone else in the NZ CAA is actually qualified........

Fordy,

Apparently it isn't rocket science -

Post #7 in this thread to start?

He turns out to be ex-AAC (UK) who was a door-gunner turned pilot and reknowned for being a serial bullsh*tter.

He "enhanced" his resume but what was the disqualifying feature of the Wessex for the logging operation?
He could not have been the only inspector having made that decision to deny the operating permit.

We have a case of synchronicity here?

We've had a few in the UK:

Airline pilot who conned his way onto the flight deck for many commercial flights.
PPL who conned his way to fly police helicopters.

Fordy - he did his pilot's course in about 1996, Lynx course in 1997, was taken off a QHI course in 2006 (faked a heart attack allegedly) and was posted to a basic job in the Wildcat Mission Planning System development.

As previously mentioned, he had a reputation for being unable to tell fact from fiction or truth from tales.

Very interesting. Be a few people following this with interest. Certainly burnt some bridges hasn't he.
