My wife has been offered a job in Dubai with a housing
allowance of around 20000 UAE. What's the best place
to live, and would 20000 UAE cover it.

20000 would get your wife a locker at a gym, if that...

I'm assuming you're missing a zero at the end in which case she could get a decent 2BR apartment in a good location.

Assuming 200k, this will get you a reasonable place throughout Dubai, nice 3 bed villa slightly out of town or a good 2 bed, 2 bath apartment in Marina or downtown. It should also cover some to all charges depending on location. DEWA (Dubai Electricity & Water) is not cheap for expats and watch out for hidden expenses and fees. You can currently buy a very nice 4 bed villa just outside of Arabian Ranches community for around 3 million. If you can stump up 30% for the deposit plus another 6% for fees and commission, what you pay in rent will give you an unencumbered villa within 10-12 years.

EK Captains get slightly less than that allowance, (circa 190k per annum) but if you're without kids, it will do fine. If you're here long term, it might be worth buying as prices are slowly dropping and there's plenty of incentives available to buy but a 6-12 months rental would be my advice to get a feel for the place and where you might want to live first.

You are joking right? She will be able to rent a bunkbed space to share it with 16 other lower wage people in the same flat. Since you typed 20 000 twice I am assuming this is not a typo so I would tell your wife to just say no. Dubai is a tough place to survive and even worse if you are underpaid

Just as an extra bit of info. Be aware that your wife cannot sponsor you for a residency visa.
Men can sponsor their wives, but not vice versa.
You would have to get a job yourself to stay here, otherwise you would need to leave the country every month to come back in on a visitors visa.

Some corrections here:

- Women can sponsor their husband, but only in specific job categories, or earning categories (I know a local VP who is sponsoring her husband, and she is not in teaching or nursing)

- If you are European (from the Schengen zone), the going back and forth rules have become more complicated, as it is now 90 days out of a 180 day period (based on the reciprocal rules with the Schengen zone).

- In terms of living, you can get a 2-bed townhouse in JVT for 150K, DEWA will have 5% of that as taxes. Springs will run you between 150-180K (although you can splurge to 220K too)

1.8 - 2.0m will get you a nice apartment in a reasonable area or equally a 2-3 bedroom townhouse in a reasonable area. The problem is currently it will cost you around 33% of the purchase price for the minimum deposit and associated purchase fee’s.

You can move out of company but only of you buy, you cant move out to rent.

Just wondering if anyone is in the know or has an opinion about what would be the best company accomodation for a family with a toddler. I understand that as a family I will mostly likely be placed in Meydan Heights or Meydan South. Does anyone have any idea what place is better or what the pros and cons are for both?
