Guys,

I have browsing through Airliners.net and have notived various 747 aircraft.

Some of them are 747-436, 747-475, 747-437 etc.

What are the last three numbers. Do they mean anything or are we looking at a different model of the 747.

Mind you have noticed that all the BA 747's have the 436 at the end.

Any ideas ?

The last two digits is the customer number at boeing..

Ie. BA´s number is 36 so all their boeings will be 747-436 777-236 and so on.

Thanks for clarifying the last two digits (Customer number.) Does the first number mean anything and also how do the people who have posted the photos on Airliners know what the customer number at boeing is ?

Lan Ding Gere.
36 is BA build spec, the 4 means 400 series.
37 Air India.
75 Canadian Airlines International.
22 United and so on.

Hi guys, you very kindly helped me out with a previous forum with regards to 747-436 and explaining that the last three digits are the configuration type and the Boeing customr number.

I have just seen a photo of a Lufthansa with the captions B744 Lufthansa. I checked on the list and apparantly 44 is the customer number for a totally different airline. Is the 744 a configuration of the 747 as opposed to the customer number ?

Most confused.

Yes it is confusing! 744 is another way of saying 747-400 ie a 400 series 747. A Lufthansa 744 is a 747 - 430.

I think I have got it now.

So for example if we had a 747 200 series and owned by BA it could read either 747-236, (747, 200 series and 36 being the customer number), OR 742-236, (747 200 series and again the customer number.)

I hope I am right, but thank you for clarifying this for me.

By jove you've got it!!

However, it isn't who owns the aircraft per se, but who ordered it. (Each have different spec's) Virgin's fleet is a good example - they took delivery NEW of a couple (?) 747-400's originally ordered by Alitalia.

We'll turn you into a spotter before the week ends!!!!

Wow,

If the last two numbers are of who ordered the aircraft, the case for Virgin, would show 43 (Alitalia) as opposed to 1r for Virgin. Would this be the case then ?

Since the last number of the plane model (Boeing) is always a 7 (strange coincidence, isn't it? Maybe a conspiracy of some sort?), people often place the first digit of the series number to shorten the whole thing. So B744 means B747-400, whoever ordered it.
You usually don't mix it up, like B744-436, because there you get the series number from the second lot...

By the way, hate to barge in on this fascinating drool but ol' Lan Dingy Gere still didn't quite get it. It's not 742-236 but 747-236 (which of course, is a 742).

Sorry, must be the ground instructor in me. Can't believe I actually took time out to write this nonsense!:cool:

Ok Strain, so the 747 , 742 thing it was a typo, why make a big thing of it.

Everyone can make mistakes. In fact, you just made a typo yourself. It's Lan Ding Gere and not Lan Dingy Gere.

However, at least genuine people who know the information have made an effort in sharing the informatin and helping those like myself.

And as for your time ? You mentioned you don't know why you bothered. Good question. Why did you bother typing junk if you know it's not going to be of any help to anyone.?

You need to take a break from your text books as just as your names suggests, you're under a lot of strain, so please take it out on something else rather than post a comment that is of no use.
