So the Australians got 35 odd years service from that aeroplane and the Indonesians managed 10 months.....

What is it with all the recent fatal accidents in West Papua? Are pilots just ignoring the basics of common sense and good airmanship, or is it something more?

It's about the same level it's always been at really. The DGCA is chronically under-resourced and Papua is lacking in infrastructure. Wamena is a busy airport in mountainous terrain without an instrument approach.

Yea - West Papua and PNG have hellish terrain, lots of bad weather, no infrastructure

I'm by no means excusing the accident rate though, it's pathetic. Just the above are definitely among the contributory factors.

Having spent 7 years flying I know it well and despite it's challenges I've never felt the accident rate was justified.
