Flt Sgt Joseph D Moyes

I have a copy of Jane's All The Worlds Aircraft 1956-57. Inside the front cover is a label which says it was awarded to Flt Sgt J D Moyes in July 1956 as the The L G Groves Memorial Prize for Meteorlogical Air Observers. Inside, in a large brown envelope , is the Certificate in mint condition. It would be nice if I could return this to Flt Sgt Moyes or his relatives. Is there a way of finding them?

July 1956 seems to be right at the very end of the RAF Meteorological era before satellite weather observations took over. I believe the last unit flying the Atlantic reconnaissance flights over the Atlantic, called Bismuths, was 202 Squadron operating out of Aldergrove with Hastings aircraft.

They have an old boys network; try them.

Again it may be someone working in an ATC tower.

The L. G. Groves' Memorial Award for Meteorological Air Observers, of the approximate annual value of £12 10 shillings, will be confined to flying personnel who have been employed during the year on meteorological air observer duties and will be awarded for meritorious work or devotion to duty.

You are right. Up to 1964 according to the MOD. My father flew the Halifaxs for three years. I cannot think of a more boring job.

Disregard that last statement. I lived on the airfield and would watch them take off and land some eight or nine hours later; usually on three engines.

FED, we had a Met Observer on our ITS in 1961, good bloke, Chalky White. Satellites were rather later than 1956 methinks, Sputnik was the following year. Thor was another couple of years later.

You might like to try contacting a couple of posters over on the RAF Commands forum, Resmoroh and Lyffe. They're both ex-Met Office, and have worked in the past on putting together lists of meteorology-related service personnel, which may include post-war Meteorological Air Observers.

Following the link to the two types of Groves awards I was struck/stricken by how many of them either worked with me, for me, or told me what to do and where to get off.

It is a list of the great and the good [and sometimes ugly] of the Met Office, and has set off powerful reminiscences, so thank you for that.

I have just come upon you post and couldn’t believe my eyes.
The gentleman you are referring (flt sgt Joseph David Moyes who was my very dear uncle. Sadly he passed away over ten years ago.

He never married and and after his retirement in 1976 he moved to the highlands to live with my mothers sister. Sadly they have all passed on. I have the most wonderful memories of spending all my school holidays with him, he was like a father to me, so kind, clever and inspiring, one of a kind you might say. I miss him to this day.

I have a few momentos but he was a humble man and didn’t put much value on material things. I have a small newspaper cutting regarding the Kings commendation and a photo of him in uniform, but it would be wonderful to have his certificate to keep in the family. Of course I would be willing to pay postage. Just wish I had seen your post sooner!
