Hi all,

I've been tasked with moving away from a paper based cockpit to an eCockpit.

I've been provided with iPads and..........where do I start?

How do you get a Fly Smart app up and running. Airbus only or are there other providers who presumably provide a cheaper product.

Are the other providers likely to be approved by the relevant aviation authority?

Any help here would be greatly appreciated

I went down your road about four years ago. There are a few aspects to it.
1. Performance data
2. W&B data
3. Manuals
4. The setting up and hosting of Flysmart server
5. Regulatory issues.

1.your performance data for your airports is calculated in PEP. Then this data is translated into a Flysmart load. this is then uploaded to your server to sync.
2. W&b is set up using your tail data load sheets and then this is generally not changed until a rewreigh. You do need to define cabin zones, std weights, crew config etc.
3. Manuals - if your manuals are different to AB you need to get that data into Flysmart format.
4. You need a server Just a Windows 7 (!) machine that's hooked to the net. Keep it clean and sole use. It's pretty simple to set up without lots of technical knowledge.
5. Policy. The regulator will likely want to see policy surrounding :
Mounting
Charging
Minimum charge for t/o
Updating of loads
Other apps on device
Training
Verification of loads received
iOS version and updating only when instructed (this can be 2-3 weeks after Apple, sometimes longer).

Also Airbus permission to use in cockpit. AB test each iPad model at simulated high altitude and cold and issue a document certifying each model. Expect to pay through the nose for this.... and each time for each iPad model

Basically you can so all yourself or outsource the lot or anywhere inbetween depending on your company size.
Good luck.

Thank you both very much,

Compressor Stall, are you airbus? If so did you use an outsourcer or did you opt for an autonomous in house solution?

If you are airbus and did outsource can you recommend one?

Kind Regards,

V

For the moment Airbus SAS themselves are the only provider on iPad platform. Which gives them a significant business advantage, and they are very successful about building a vendor-lock situation. Expect to pay. Expect to pay for an MDM too, which they are happy to sell as well. Windows platform provides for much favourable battleground for the operator, of course with it's own drawbacks.

Flysmart worlks very well and the savings in flex temps must be paying for the cost many times over.

The Octopus AFM core is the same for any certified software, hence the results are identical. Airbus, just like anybody else, target between 80-40 % of your savings to end in their own pocket. Once you go iPad (it may still be worth it due different reasons) you have no other contender. The assumed savings over engine life do not normally pass CFO review board anyhow.

Will Airbus SAS provide a product with updated obstacles, R/W WIP etc on a daily or monthly basis and this reflected in an absolutely current and accurate V1, Vr, V2 and FLEX?

What are the set up costs for this roughly?

I'm hearing about a software license, an ops tech data package, a Winpep file?????

And what is an MDM?

Thanks. V.

AB do not provide obstacle database and EOSID routings. That's normally purchased from a 3rd party. The frequency of updates is up to you, as fast as you can obtain them and would be ready to publish them from the in-house installed data management tool (part of the software package).

The pricing setups vary greatly. And with Airbus, do not forget to include mandatory training for your ground personnel to be held in TLS.

Thanks FlightDetent,

Any other problems or issues to be expected please feel free to share them.

Appreciated,
