What are the rules for military aircraft breaking the sound barrier?
Last week there was a loud bang followed by a quieter one, obviously caused by an aircraft breaking the sound barrier, I live fairly close to the North Sea.

Who knows - it may have been intercepting an armed Russian aircraft in time to deter it from entering UK airspace with the intention of evaporating Sunderland.

On the other hand, perhaps a hand slipped on the thrust levers....:E and before they knew it they had dropped a little boom.

Last time I looked it was 35nm inbound to land and 10nm parallel/outbound. Unless you're intercepting for real, then it's as cleared by ADC.

There has been a recent military exercise over the North Sea in NOTAMS ; possibly something involved in that made the boom.

I understand the ones sent from Coningsby to SW England for an intercept dropped a boom across the midlands.
