In life, and in aviation, it is important to be alert not just for the stuff you've been trained for, but for the unforeseen hazards and for unexpected clues and opportunities.

So you're looking for a couple of miscreants in semi rural countryside when you see this sight in a field:

Apparently it only took the pilots about a minute to cotton on to what a rather cluey bunch of 6-12yo kids were trying to tell them.
