Here goes: I may have been the victim of an enormous wind-up here...

After seeing Capt. Eric Brown lecture a few years ago, I was told by the Branch Chairman that his nickname "Winkle" was not personal to him, but an official designation awarded to the shortest pilot in the FAA. A Signal was even sent round the Fleet announcing this when he joined. (He seems to have kept the official nickname upon retirement.)

Can anyone from the FAA verify this? Or have I just been spun a convincing story?

I can't remember the tale, but that means little since I often forget why I've gone upstairs :E

Captain Brown told me he acquired the nickname as a boy because he was so small.

Denis (Titch) Tayler who was the Belfast test pilot for Short Brothers. The press described him as "Britain's smallest test pilot flying Britain's largest aircraft".
