Strange to see C-130's launching missiles

Interesting to see specific mentions of F-35B operating from, and being supported from, the UK QE2 carrier, in this carrier.

Purely my own view (nothing more) but I think's it's probable that we will see USMC F-35B detachments on to the QE2 sooner rather than later. Cross-decking used to be the term, but I think that the USMC are looking for something a bit more organised and productive than the old 'cross decking' trips.

In particular, the team(s) will need to address some chunky issues. These include how USMC specific weapons would be stored and handled, how USMC aircraft operations would be authorised and conducted within the MAA regulations, and how the QE2 would be cleared by the USMC as an 'operational' base for missions and support. These are by no means insuperable, given a properly resourced and experienced joint team, and the right levels of political support from senior stakeholders on both sides of the pond.

In my view, it's a great opportunity to really 'leverage' (US word I know, we could say 'exploit') the long history of US/UK co-operation around STOVL to benefit the nation(s). How good would a QE2 look like with 34 USMC F-35Bs on board? It's one of those 'win win' situations. It would help solve the USMC's current shortage of available decks, and would really help the RN get the QE2's crew and facilities worked up with a full sized fixed wing air group.

Interesting times - best regards as ever to all those responsible for making this happen.

Nutloose,

The KC-130J is a fantastic bit of kit. It can be used as an AAR tanker, as a ground refueling point, or add the HARVEST HAWK kit for air-to-ground attack.

The HARVEST HAWK WSO kit is palletized, many of the operators are detached from AH-1Z units as the tracker ball is the same as on the AH-1Z with benefits in logistics. In addition to Hellfire underwing, it can carry Griffin munitions in a launcher on the ramp which can be reloaded in flight.

9 Squadrons x 16 F-35B
5 Squadrons x 10 F-35B
4 Squadrons x 10 F-35C
2 Squadrons x 10 F-35B reserve
2 Squadrons x 25 F-35B FRS

From the document - Kind of makes a mockery of our 2 Sqns and an OCU plan...

Get a Harvest Hawk equipped KC130J and an AC130, who needs F35 ? (for the benefit of some posters, I'm just kidding).

History tells us that we will sell our aircraft to the USMC as we did the Harrier.
