F35 Seating Position - how does it effect the Driver?

Just seen this head on shot of the F35 (https://image-store.slidesharecdn.com/fb1646d5-3633-4b31-95dc-31fdf1d52fdb-original.jpeg).

It looks like the seating position is slightly starboard of centreline. Clearly there's a design reason for that but what intrigues me is the effect on the body - especially when maneouvering. Or is it negligible?

Thoughts anyone?

Aren't the pilots wearing those helmets that let you see "through" the plane so I guess it doesn't matter where you sit. In the future you'd probably be sitting in an office in downtown Washington.

Thanks to Lockheed Martin I got to sample the feel of the magic carpet ride by wearing one those helmets in a SIM. Sure is a game changer.

Perhaps I can help.

The pilot's seat position on the F-35 is plumb on the centreline. What you're seeing is an effect of the camera position, just as Rhino has pointed out.

What the picture does show is just how far along the F-35 has taken combat aircraft cockpit design - although there are bound to be those who will criticise it, and perhaps they are right. The pilots I've spoken with who have flown the jet for real and in sims reckon it's a huge step forward.

It's art of the AEL Sistemas (Elbit subsidiary) concept for JAS 39E Gripen, but the same glass is going in the F-15SA, no doubt with all nameplates saying AEL and written in Portuguese...

Seeing the gripen cockpit is Brazilian concept artwork, I thought they would label it 6th gen and get rid of the HUD and rear vision mirrors. The artwork could also be enhanced by a couple of missile tracks and F-35's exploding in the distance. Perhaps that's in one of the other concept artworks. :ok:

Deviating slightly, but still on the subject of seating position, I have seen mention on t'internet -can't remember where- that the F-16's seat angle, while assisting admirably with sustaining high g-force, has caused some pilots with many hours on the Viper to suffer neck/back problems from having to tilt their head further forward than if they were flying jets with more upright seats.

Has anyone else come across this, or is it just something and nothing? Sounds feasible, but then again...

As to your other post about the other guys - Google Maps now has a right mouse click pop-up with 'Add Waypoint, IP, Target, etc etc specially designed for those 5th Gen aircraft :)

No touchscreen? And it looks like they have a legacy FMS in the left console. I do like the central control stick vs the right hand only sidestick.
