Adding a new type rating

I'm in a posses of a ATPL(A) JAA license. My type rating expired 3 months ago and my MEP class rating expired 4 years ago.Can I add a new type rating or I need to renew any of the above expired ratings first ?

I think you can add a new rating although it depends on your authority. Some will insist you have a valid ME/IR some don't (IAA).
