Upgrade will take 12-15 years. The good news is - SWA FO's can make what captains here in the region make.

Apparently, 250 pilots to be hired this year (September start dates) and the unofficial "heard it from a check airman" is maybe another few hundred in 2016.

In case you are interested.......................

Yes, SWA will be hiring @250 pilots this year and rumor of 600 next year. Don't hold your breathe for the 600 number but this year will be 250. Hiring is just for retirements and increased vacation accrual from a longevity standpoint.

It has been pointed out that upgrades will be long, @15 years, and that is true unfortunately. The flip side is that FO pay is good and the opportunity to make more is available. Last year, my 8th, I earned slightly over 150K with 17/18 days off and zero open time pick up. Add $14,500 401k + $15,000 profit sharing and it adds up.

Not thrilled with the long upgrade nor the direction the company has taken but the money is there should anyone consider making the move.

Just my 2 cents.

Cheers

Give me a green card and I'll be over there so fast. 18 days off with that kind of pay, I will be willing to keep that right seat warm until I retire.

Recruitment numbers may also have something to do with their big expansion south of the border.

I wonder we have have so many Ryanair pilots here yet none from SWA?

I laugh when I hear Ryanair pilots compare themselves to Southwest Airlines.

SWA and Ryanair??! About the only thing they have in common is that they both fly 737's. SWA pilots are probably some of the best paid 737 pilots in the world with some of the best work rules out there as well...

Becareful, I am not sure you have your info straight. FLYMSY the 8 year gear dude at SWA finally pulled 150k pretax. Not sure how much he got for his kids education from SWA......not to mention how much of that 150k uncle Sam demanded. First year FO in the region especially on widebody will pull close to 150k and narrow body will do about 135k. For Captain, Please forget it. Work rules however...... Whole other story. 8 years in around here FLYMSY would be left seat 777 or 380
