When I started flying commercially back in the early 90's, the most unlikely prospect for long-term pilot employment was probably a job with the Air Ambulance. Today, while the charter market seems pretty much on its ass, the offshore oil industry threatened by exploration cutbacks and the price of oil tanking, and the Police ASU's being decimated, the cash-rich AA's seems to be by far the best bet for a comfy, long- term chair. Who'd have seen that one coming?

That being well before my time of flying may I ask why Air Ambulance flying was not considered a valuable option for long term employment?

Hawkeyes, for the very good reason that they hardly existed back then.

My thoughts at the time back in the late 80s/early 90s, rightly or wrongly, were that AAs were relatively new, funded purely by public donation and if the donations dried up, as did the job.
