Helicopter makes emergency landing in Snargate Lane, Brookland, near Brenzett

Two men have been treated by paramedics after a helicopter crashed and split in half during an emergency landing this morning.

Fire crews from Ashford, two ambulances, the hazardous area response team (HART) and police were all called to Snargate Lane, in Brookland, near Brenzett at 11.10am following reports a chopper had crash landed.

The pair walked away from the Robinson R22 aircraft after it rolled onto its side.

The aircraft had taken off from Headcorn Aerodrome earlier this morning before being forced to crash land in the field.

Parts of the aircraft's tail have been left scattered in the field and the rotors have been bent following the impact.

How do you get hold of wrecked Robbie? Buy a plot of land and wait!

The 'rear rotor'(!) appears undamaged.

No 'run on' ability following TR failure(?) in a soggy ploughed field.

Well done to pull that one off under the circumstances.

Re SilsoeSid's tag. I thought Lucifer was more a "blood of the righteous" drinker than egg-nog?!

Warning to all other Heli Pilots...

If terra Firma is rapidly approaching and you see a ploughed filed, always try to land across the furrows. ( the lines are the furrows in case you are a City Boy)

For landing parallel means you would more than likely tip onto one side as one Skid found the voids where the furrows are turned over and leaning into the next furrow.

always try to land across the furrows.

Would you prioritise that over landing into wind?

Would you prioritise that over landing into wind? Very good question! Who would and why?

Of course that's only an opinion, a google search leading to books on the subject suggest otherwise, for example!

IMHO, ones authoritative landing technique would be adjusted according to the terrain one would be approaching.

I need a picture …Quick!!!…. Peter, parallel or perpendicular?

A link to the drink Advocaa (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advocaat)t might help with explaining the pun, for those of us who are not familiar with that tipple.
Thanks for pointing the way, in any case. :ok:
(I had always taken SS's sub title to indicate someone teaching the Devil how to suck eggs, which seems to have been wrong).
As to landing decisions: looking forward to that further discussion.

If its soggy clay you won't get away without breaking the aircraft, especially if you have lost TRA. The furrows will just make it more difficult to walk to the pub for that stiff drink you have well and truly earned.

SS. Funnily enough I spoke to him this morning. His new role is electrifying and will allow him to work until he is admitted to the the Chelsea Hospital :p

I spent best part of 18 hours extracting a 206 from a ploughed field one February. On its side of course, and just about every recovery machine got stuck. Oh how we laughed.

Hardly original though.

We used to say the same in Germany about Luftwaffe F104 Starfighters, when they were dropping out of the sky at about the same frequency as Robbies.
