Way down the link there is a bit where they say they have to ask you about your health and weight.

As I recall when I was reading about flights in the 2-seater a few years back that there was an absolute upper weight limit of 180 lbs, including your flying kit.

Lets some of us more generously proportioned hopefuls (ok, fatties!) out, I'm afraid :(

Er...the chaps at Boultbee have aquired a T9 that used to live at our establishment and believe me, persons of more than 180lbs gross weight with 'chute etc used to fly in it with no probs...:ok:

• You'll be joining a group of up to 50 which is split into smaller groups so you'll have plenty of access to the aircraft

You would gulp at the running costs of a Spit Nutty. I seem to recall 40 odd grand just for the insurance for a six month display season.

Thanks for that thing. The one I read about was the one in Canada - not sure if it is still flying. Mind you I'm still having trouble with pounds - too few of the sterling variety! Never mind, I still plan a flight in a Tiger Moth as I've never flown in an open biplane - thats more in my price range!

I'm fortunate to have had a trip in both a spit (T9) and a tiger moth free of charge, and I highly recommend both to those who have been limited by what the service has to offer you. While the spit was, as you would expect, totally awesome, the tigger was way more fun than I was expecting and really would be well worth every penny, particularly to those poor bretheren trapped in heavy aircraft.

Yup I know, I have worked on them in the past and there is one next door to me that I give them the odd lift with bits when needed. :O

I'm pretty sure that as an 'air experience flight' you can't touch the controls, so unlikely.

As a PPL you can have a formal lesson but that's much more expensive.

Was looking at one for my sons 18th as he wants to work on them if is successful getting an apprenticeship. Looking at the prices though we may be looking at a Tiger Moth or maybe a Harvard flip instead.

I was talking to the owner of a Mustang in NZ about the eye-watering cost of flying in warbirds and he said: "I know it's a lot of money, but trust me, we aren't making any money out of you. You are just helping to defray the costs!"

This from someone who had just installed a "part-exchange" Merlin for $250,000.


I'm pretty sure that as an 'air experience flight' you can't touch the controls, so unlikely.

There is no way I would pay for a flight if I wasn't allowed to touch the controls. I've now got Harvard, Spitfire and Vampire time in my logbook. :ok:

Plus "a whizz around Auckland Harbour" in the Mustang. No controls, but holding up my video camera during 5g aeros was interesting!

Expensive, but memories to last a lifetime.

PS I've just looked at the prices on the Biggin Hill site and I'll revise my comment about NZ warbird prices. Make that "semi-eye-watering".

The tigger, whilst not a Spit, is a good lark. People wave at you when you toddle past, it really is a good grin and a damn site cheaper than a Spit; and I'll let you modern jet chappies into a secret, the footrests move around and are connected to a ship's thingy at the back!! How about that!

I know people that have turned down free spit flights lol.
