Been the most sever storm I have seen at my office in Stafford in the 15 years I have been here.

This screen shot was not the worst of it either. A LOT of large hail in the CBD and east of me.

Two maintenance facilities had their doors removed completely.
Old Sunland hanger front and rear sections blown in.
Two Skycatchers and two Jabbapoos flipped out front of terminal. (At least they aren't blocking up the 60 minute temporary parking area any more as per usual.) Pretty sure Pathfinder employees can take the week off...
C172 (MZW) and C152 (IVW) next to them also rolled up.
RQ Citabria balled up.
Multiple aircraft "moved"
TBM700 almost turned into a metro.

Forecast storms may impact flights tomorrow and your Virgin Australia flight may be disrupted. We apologise for any inconvenience.

How right they were, flight cancelled

YBAF looks a bit battered but have seen a lot worse out there a long while back but certainly a big pain for the flipped over schools

No one has mentioned hail, was there any

Not everyone had enough. You can see ANZ805 on the divert to Sydney in the bottom right corner of the screen. I think a QF flight diverted to SYD as well & some went to the Gold Coast.

When we went over on the approach to BNE a little later, Archerfield looked like a swamp & the NDB was out as well.

Yeah, the Warbirds hangar was severely damaged. One of the doors ended up 150m over the fence in another paddock - the '44 (apparently Grant Kenny's) on its side. A few light planes pushed back toward the Warbirds hangar had one off the doors land on their wings, and the other door went back inside and narrowly (and I mean a hands width) missed the wing of a CJ1. The wind blew through took out the front doors of the office. A couple of guys missed getting hit by one of the doors by diving under an aircraft.

One guy in a CJ2 ex YSSY was given clearance, which was then cancelled with 60kt winds and the NDB gone. Looked pretty nasty down there.

28th Nov 2014, 02:29
It doesn't take much wind to blow off a big hangar door. Ours went AWOL recently with nowhere near that much wind. It would have been scary; probably best to stand well clear, no point getting squashed for the sake of delaying the inevitable damage.

No, but have we got a deal for you on a 6 cyl Jab engine!:8

Things could get a little interesting regarding the (airport installed) anchor cable which appears to have let go and allowed the majority of the flipped birds to go on their merry way. Have a close look at the photo below.

Airbatic, but not a Decathlon.

Steve Hart's hanger is the one down the west end. Two doors reattached yesterday. Two buggered. The Decathlon in there was smacked in the wing by a door and pushed back under one of the Yaks. L39 copped a ding on the right tip tank and door scraped the canopy and dinged the right side. Not major. Another door dropped on a Tomahawk and a C310 scraped one tank across the ground and banged the other into the hanger. Nothing operational inside damaged and the Sea Fury is OK. A20 was over at Cameron's and everything on that side of the airport seemed ok. Sheets of metal in trees near the BP. Lucky no-one killed.

Been there, done that. The airport will do their hardest to get out of having to cough up for the owners excess or repair bills. Make sure all owners of damaged planes (that were tied down, or hit by one that was tied down) all pursue the airport for the $$$.

Pay attention in class, BPA, there are more than just the two flycatchers that got flipped, including surprise, surprise a couple of plastic fantastic Jabaloos. 'Sides I'm told they're giving Jab engines away with every cup of coffee at the Bundy Maccas at the moment.

Re the airport, I suspect the aircraft insurers will be after them to recover, never mind owners. They're not known for being backward in coming forward when there is the possibility of clawing back some of what they shelled out.

Don't worry Tinstaafl, only one of your birds, MZW, was written off.

The other that was flipped was actually IVZ, in which I have many instructing hours.

Unfortunately, it was already derelict having been bought by someone who couldn't (or didn't want to) pay his maintenance bills. A sad finale to a good little aeroplane.

Yes I know more than the Skycatches were flipped but you need to pay attention to my post, as I said there are no 6 CYL Lycoming or 6 CYL Jabs IN THOSE TWO AIRCAFT, as the photo you posted is of Pathfinders two Skycatcher 's (24-8329 and 24-8511).

I see the yellow Citabria IPI somehow managed to get over/between SRO and her stablemate and am told she was blown out of the open sided hangar in front of them. That aside there is going to be a whole lot of less dramatic damage about the field, I hear RQAC's RA reg Sling copped a bent aileron and both BFG's 172's are grounded, despite not having budged from their hangar.

Whilst I don't expect people affected to not seek compensation, a lawyers interest in sueing is not in the interest of the general aviation community.
People salivating and braying for blood from airport owners in this respect will just result in all all airports in Australia removing all tie down provisions. Lawyers will be happy, but we will not. I want more airport facilities, not fewer. So seek compensation, but an out of court settlement without liability being admitted would probably be best in the long run.
Airport owners are not our enemy, and we want more facilities, not risk averse airport owners.

How long has the cable been there? Perhaps it was installed before privitisation?

601
3rd Dec 2014, 11:35
A lot of the cables were installed there in the 70s. That is last century.

I remember sitting in an Islander parked outside Rex Aviation watching a couple C180s come adrift from a cable and slide across the concrete during a storm in the mid 70s. One ended up under the wing of the Islander with the LH wingtip on the ground just clear of the RH main gear of the Islander.

The reason I was in the Islander was that there were no spare tiedown points anywhere on the field and had just parked it as the storm stuck. The place was full of aeroplanes. So I parked the Islander's tail to the expected wind as per the AFM. Other wise it would have flown away.

Ultralights

actually, there was very littel wind involved with most of the storms that passed through sydney last night, very heavy rain, countless lightning strikes at bankstown, but only 15 kt wind gusts.

Squawk7700
3rd Dec 2014, 22:06
I was just north of the city last night, vertical and horizontal rain combined for 30 mins but very little wind. The traffic came to a standstill and it took over an hour from St Leonards to the City (usually 20 mins).

If this is global warming, I'm not impressed.

gerry111
4th Dec 2014, 07:31
The wind here at Richmond was a lot more than 15 kts! A number of large trees felled. And it bucketed down. Most of the town lost power for several hours. Traffic chaos as all seven sets of traffic lights were off. Even the trains were stranded. It was the wildest wx I've seen for quite a while.
