Correct me if I'm wrong, but weren't most pre-war FAA pilots actually RAF personnel on secondment?

Chevvron.......I believe that you are correct, especially since although formed in 1924, pre 1939 it was actually the:

The Fleet Air Arm of the Royal Air Force

Most WAFUs seem to forget that when discussing FAA history......

Bravo / Zulu. JE ...WAFUs are amused;) ps always thought that FAA pilots were mostly RNR and RNVR. Pre War ps there was one famous Bootie pilot at Taranto Major Ollie Patch

Read your history troops. The FAA was responsible for the air defence of the UK in the 14-18 war. The RAF did not exist.

The convoys were the lifeline to the Uk and were initially defended by carriers etc as the shore base patrols could not cover the atlantic gap.

Surely that was the Royal Naval Air Service (RNAS) and not the Fleet Air Arm (FAA) in Worl War One?

In addition to the above - as I understand it - the RFC was formed in 1912 with a Naval Wing and a Military Wing. In 1914 the Naval Wing split off and became the RNAS, only to be combined again in 1918 as the Royal Air Force.

The air defence of UK was provided by both RFC and RNAS squadrons, initially commanded by an Admiral and later by a Major General.
