Can anyone provide me with some details about Australian HEMS crashes? I have searched the internet but found it surprisingly difficult. I searched the ATSB site and found the one at Blackheath. but the advanced filter does not seem to be working and a search results in hundreds of results.

I know of the several in Queensland during the 90's, but there were also a number earlier on in Victoria and NSW - 80's I think.

I think the Melbourne Angel of Mercy helicopter crashed - maybe into Port Phillip. There were also a few around Sydney.

Thanks

There was one en route to Hamilton Island in 2003.
Another near Marlborough in 2000.
Another Fraser Island 1993.

All were night VFR and CFIT.

Mmmm ...

Having been intimately involved with the 'Angel of Mercy' from (1974-1980) .. I think that I can say that it was NEVER involved in ANY operational mishap ...
(of course I stand to be corrected) BUT I'll be VERY suprised to be informed of any .. it was of course superseded by the Vic Pol air ambulances and the NSC machines (politics?) from 1981 onwards ...

IT (the 'Angel of Mercy') never crashed ... as far as i know ...

:ugh:

Thanks spinwing. I stand corrected.

I had a very vague recollection of something going into the bay a long time back. Maybe it wasn't an air ambulance.

Maybe you were thinking of the SPRS (Southern Peninsular Rescue Service) Bell Longranger which went in whilst doing some training, off Portsea?

I'm sure I was. I had a feeling it was air ambulance or rescue. I vaguely remember seeing it on the news.
Any idea when this would have been? Late 70s or early 80s I suspect

"I've searched the Internet but ..."

The PPRuNe version of Farcebooks 'You Must Share This', in that you know it's not quite right.

Slats, to save you typing the thread title into Google (other search engines are available) if you were to, you would find an amazing amount of information out there, for example https://www.mja.com.au/journal/2005/182/1/safety-helicopter-aeromedical-transport-australia-retrospective-study

Hope that helps :ok:
