I am wondering if anyone here has tried this guy's AStar/EC-xxx adapted 24v USB charger device. It's the first of it's kind that I have seen and would be a nice accessory to have. Obviously it's a homemade part on some sort of 3D printer. How would you feel using something like this on your ship?

I have no problem in trying such devices -as long as they can be isolated quickly!
If device is 'fixed' to aircraft then different matter entirely......
We tend to get a bit touchy about using the aircraft power source for such devices but let's not forget that we are usually talking about low-voltage devices.
I would certainly think twice about plugging some homemade kit into my 240v AC domestic supply but you'd be amazed what uses pilots conjure up for a 24v DC supply !

I know they are pricey but the approved USB points are great we have six in our ec 120 , 2 ether side for pilot and passenger and 2 in the back for the rear passengers

I got this response back from the seller:
The unit has been tested for almost an year with an Ipad 4 in an EC155. working great!
Although it will not reach the maximum charging current 3A, All Apple devices does have a detection for the power supply. In this case, the ipad will detect this power supply, and charge with a current of 2A. so you will be within the limits of the power supply. the larger the divice is, the longer it takes to be fully charged.
The temperature should not be a problem. For apple devices, the power supply will not be charged at full current. and the housing will retain full strength till 60°C/ 140°F (pla melting temperature is 180°C/350°F)

Seems reassuring. It's a very odd item to find on eBay but if it works thats awesome! I'm going give it try on my EC-130B4. I'll let you know if I end up tossing a flaming ball of plastic out of my sliding window... :):)
