Some marvellous helicopter filming on this video of railway footage probably from the 1990s.

"Aerial Voyage - Trains Filmed From Above"

Many of the shots are filmed below the level of the line and some in front and just above the trains. From the comments these must be from British Rail's own advertising filming - there is a sequence of a Royal Mail train passing up the Lune Valley near the Lake District and mention is made of it being a special train filmed to duplicate the original black and white film of W.H Auden's The Postal Order.

Anyone know who might have been involved in filming this?

Near the end of the video there is a sequence crossing Rannoch Moor in the highlands with the helicopter very close to the locomotive. At about 57:16 you can see the reflection of the white helicopter in the loco windows and to my untrained eye it looks like a Squirrel?

probably from the 1990s.
Hmm...1960s perhaps?

That is definitely a Squirrel of some variety. The chin window and the tip of the skid are the giveaways.

You're almost certainly correct.

That's a DH Leopard Moth in the opening sequence with the Mallard.

Sorry not Mallard in the opening sequence. It's Coronation.

^^ Fair enough, but it did have a 60's feel, especially the narration.
Brought back some memories, thanks for posting.

OMG, I have accidentally logged in to spotter central! - do I get my anorak now, or can I log out and pretend it never happened?

The majority of the film is material from the British Rail commercial shot in 1988. It was directed by Hugh Hudson, and when it was first shown it took up an entire commercial break.

Despite the permissions and exemptions, Rule 5 got a bashing.

MMMM? A white squirrel of that era? Colt aviation had some of those......might have been an old mate of mine well used to hedge hopping in Sioux and Gazelle? Who ever filmed it did not have the benefit of gyro stabilised nose mounted cameras so there was some very skilful sideways flying......

Can't remember which it was, a 355 I hope - for some of it at least. I do know that the stuff over London was a Cabair 355.

Nope, the pilot was never a member of the UK armed forces.

Who ever filmed it did not have the benefit of gyro stabilised.....
It was a side-mounted 36" Wescam with a film camera in it. One of the first - if not the first - large-scale commercials shot in the UK using one. They toppled the gyros regularly - over the Forth Bridge was one occasion - and they used it in the commercial because HH liked the effect.
