It certainly is that time of the year again.

I note that some QF didn't get in tonight and headed to Adelaide however VA have been landing all night so far.

Are VA on autoland and QF not?

It's gonna be nasty in the morning....... not due to clear till mid morning AND hang around for 3 days due to the lack of wind.

At Brisbane and Sydney they were cramming everyone on the early flights as best as they could as they all knew it was coming.

It's 5.00 am in Melbourne (near the RAAF base at Laverton)

At 4.00am the fog was as thick as pea soup.

Now 5.00am and the sky is clear as, stars shining !

Hope it stays this way.

They should take over forecasting from the BOM. Ooops, I said it, into the slammer with me.

Flying into YMEN at 1650 EST yesterday you could see the fog lying over Port Philip Bay and the western shore and given the wind direction it was slowly moving northwards.

On the return leg to YGTH centre was warning aircraft heading to EN of the fog warning and that the ATIS was reporting fog in the vicinity. Just after landing at YGTH a P46T landed for fuel. He was heading for YMMB. I told him of what I had heard but he was already looking at the possibility of alternates. Wonder where he wound up last night?

Hi SOWiz,

Yes, I was unaware of this animal until a while back- I actually got made look a little foolish in an exchange in Tech Log as I didn't know this was possible.

Certain fail-operational, but not CatIIIB approved, aircraft can indeed do a no DH approach to a CatIIIA installation with 175m RVR.

So there is such a thing as CatIIIB with a DH, and CatIIIA with NO DH- LVOs can be a strange animal!!

Wiz,.... 175m RVR.??? Or at least 200m. RVR for CAT3A.
Agree that Cat3A NO DH is possible in some circumstances.

Standard winters night in YMLT, for us Heron F/O's for the nightly paper run to Hobart in 88.
First find correct Heron on foggy ramp, find captain, find Ansett porters, get abused by grumpy refueller, hopefully the lovely Gene in the tower will give us taxi clearance and away we go!!!
