Private Airfields

Afternoon. I am the Publicity Officer for the Royal Air Forces Association in Germany. I want to find out where the nearest private air field is located to the old RAF Bruggen now called Javelin Barracks. The aircraft is a Sport Cruiser PH-NNN, two seater and the pilot flies with the Edam-busters Sqn 1077 formation flight.

Do you mean a civil airfield that takes private aircraft or a private airstrip?

The Germans are a bit more rule-bound than UK in that one need permission to establish a private airstrip, in the UK one can just do it.

The result of this is airstrips are not as common, I can see some on Google earth 10-14 miles away. I have no contact details.

I'm sure someone will be along shortly with a web site for this.

Nearest 'normal' airfields are Venlo and Monchengladbach. Shame Bugger is shut RAF wise as they had a flying club on base which would have been ideal.

Laarbruch would appear to be open but now named 'Weeze Airport' so presumably civil.

Searching for the airport mentioned above at Venlo and I came across, er no I'll re-phrase that; discovered a town called 'Wankum'.

Wankum - the last BP petrol station in Germany. In other words, queues of BFG cars getting cheap petrol before shooting off to the channel ports.

There's a village near the old RAF base at Gutersloh called Fuchtorf.

There's a village in Garmisch-Partenkirchen with rather an unfortunate name - same as that BP garage minus the 'um'...:hmm:

But there's an even more unfortunately named village in Austria, whose residents are getting very cross at the number of their signposts which have been stolen by tourists....

It's the village of F*cking......

The Waldhaus brewery in the Schwarzwald produce a 4.9% abv Pilsner beer named after the Austrian village. Initially there were objections to the name from the EU trade marks people and from the village's mayor (only because the beer wasn't actually brewed there), but these were overruled. So 'F*cking Hell' beer is now sold internationally!

It seems they do haff ein sense of humour!

They try to save Javellin Barracks as Airfield and had some special permit for extraordinary glider start and landings. Maybe it is still possible to get a one-time permit from Dusseldorf? (As long as these bloody windmills are not built on the field ... last time I was there - by car -, the runway was still intact and usable.)

Many thanks for that info. I was at Brüggen myself this past weekend attending a B of B service. Unfortunately the Dutchman's mother was ill so we did not need an airfield after all. Not sure yet where next years service will be held but I suspect it will be in the Gutersloh area.
