Can anyone recommend a place I could rent an aeroplane for a couple of days in the north west? (Manchester / Liverpool ish). US-based 1,000 hr PPL with instrument rating and previous experience flying in UK airspace.

I can recommend a school over the other side of the country near York (England is a small place, so you're talking less than 100 miles), with an FAA CFI on site and who would let you rent on your FAA certificate without any hassle. Also reasonably priced.

Try LOMAC at Liverpool

Flintshire Flying School: Flintshire Flying School - North West England & North Wales (http://www.flintshireflyingschool.com)

Based at Hawarden (EGNR) just south of Liverpool (EGGP). Very large airfield, mostly quiet and you don't have to wait for a lot of commercial traffic as the only schedule flights they have is a Beluga and a EM145 (weekdays only).

Perfectly positioned for some uncontrolled airspace across Wales.
