Bloody politicians, military and civilian! So, who has failed here? Who was living in cloud cuckoo land? Where is the coherent policy that recognises there is a dangerous world out there? The Russians have not changed, we have!:oh:

But where would these stores and equipment go?
It can't be Germany as the current gang in parliament have been running BAOR and RAFG down so they must have thought it was the wrong area :)

Some of the equipment, designed to slow down a Russian advance....

When Putin looks at NATO and sees the GDP spent on defense by each nation, he knows he's ok to press.

Actions, not words.

It beggars belief. This jumped-up PR slimeball has spent the last four years
assiduously pulling apart the very fibres of British military capability Now having caused untold damage which will take years & billions to put right, having left Britain weaker than in living memory, starts waving his pencil dick at President Putin.
How do such creatures reach such high office. That's the real question.

Ahhh, but Dave and Co can sit safely behind the fact that Russia cannot attack as they would need to comply with H&S etc first. He would also need to carry out a risk assessment too and submit it in triplicate.

Why are our glorious politicians spoiling for a fight? Well, its a century after the Great War and nearly three quarters of a century after WW2. Lloyd George and Winston Churchill will always be remembered for their roles. Does Call me Dave yearn to emulate them? At least in Victorian times they could sing "We don't want to fight - but by Jingo if we do, we've got the ships, we've got the men, we've got the money too".
Private Fraser of Dad's Army would have it right today if he uttered his famous phrase "We're doomed!"

It's called writing ones name in history with someone else's blood, since Churchill and Thatcher pulled off the extraordinary.
Those that have been in power since seem to think they have the talent and resources to do the similar, sadly they have neither, it gets bad when they now expect to fete themselves in glory with not only their own troops, but with those of other countries as well...

"and Thatcher pulled off the extraordinary."

Thatcher made the decision (Falklands, Iranian Embassy etc) and had the balls to do so, the troops (of all uniform colours) were the one's who shed blood and pulled off the extraordinary.

But as you say, the UK doesn't have the resources now to do it but
the bellicose statements continue.

Before asking NATO to rethink its Russian relationship, amongst others, how about he do so himself. We, and certainly the EU, did nothing to discourage the violent overthrow of the elected president which kicked all this off. If it were down to Dave we'd be up to our armpits in Syria. Does anyone actually have a plan?

Why don't we mind our own business and sort out the myriad problems within our own (leaking) boarders.
In the meantime rebuild our armed forces back to a level commensurate with the requirements of home defence/foreign policy.
Simple really.

Why don't we mind our own business and sort out the myriad problems within our own (leaking) boarders.

Because the world is a lot smaller now, and life is a parallel project not serial.

One thing that that has never changed though, is if you don't help out your friends or strategic partners, your enemy's will, and or take advantage of it. Another words your damned if you do, and damned if you don't, the only question is how do get less damned.

Stendec5
5th Aug 2014, 21:26
rh200.

Very well. But if your aim is to help your friends (lest somebody else does), why
destroy the very means by which you would do so? with (as this Forum will show) yet more cuts ongoing?

It's lunacy.

I don't think Dave C is completely wrong.

I was arguing (to a load of deaf posts in Brussels) back in the 90's about how crucial it was that we entice Russia to join NATO, given that the North and Atlantic nature of the alliance had a rival/power node to deal with in the long term in a place called China, and also in the region that Russia referred to as "the near abroad" and all of us in the Middle East. Russia did ge an office opened in Brussels as part of the Partnership for Peace, and some other initiatives. (Not due to my efforts, but due to a few folks seeing that far into the future).

But no, some people would not let go of the Cold War while there were people in Moscow we could work with. There was a glimmer of hope in 95-96 when the US and Russians worked in the same sector in the Northern area of the Bosnia operation ... but whatever gains we made then were dashed by the overarching political mess at the highest levels.

rh200
6th Aug 2014, 04:09
why
destroy the very means by which you would do so?

You don't, thats part of the problem. I think people got a bit excited after the collapse of the Soviet union and thought we would all live in peace and harmony.

As I keep saying, change on Social, hence political take many generations and effectively needs to be breed out. Another words once some change happens you need to hold the line for a few generations until a tipping point occurs.

The simple fact is, a lot of our potential enemies think along generational if not century time frames. There is no secret to the fact that a lot of strategists think the yanks will implode. As such there has to a particular amount of planning for that, so as be best positioned to take advantage of it.

Especially as his govt directly caused them major grief by leaving only the venerable USN P3s to man the GIUK gapYes SP, but you must realise that our allies were only too happy to do that and take over our oceanic SAR responsibilities. I know that's true because I read it on an MOD website:sad::sad: Couldnt make it up, could you.:rolleyes:
