And for those who don't know:

This is the quite remarkable and true story of Squadron Leader Derek J Sharp AFC BSc Dip Comp JP RAF and his incredible adventures. Nothing perhaps was more astonishing than his survival after meeting a Mallard duck at 500 mph and his subsequent fight back to become a pilot in command once again. That he survived to age 30 was amazing, that he continued unashamedly on to a ripe old age was nothing short of a miracle. Conceivably he followed the advice written on a fridge magnet in his kitchen ‘Never drive faster than your Guardian Angel can fly’. Those who knew him would say not a chance! He lived in a time long before Political Correctness, the Breathalyser and motor car safety checks. He achieved all that he set out to do, and more. That would undoubtedly be his epitaph

Now Blunty, how goes the book? That was what you wrote 3 years ago....

Sorry to hear that a RAFAT Hawk had a coming-together with one of our feathered friends, but good to hear that the pilot got it back OK. The Team's emergencies training obviously paid dividends!

Whilst far from being an expert on this things, the port side of the Hawks nose looks like its been hit by a 20mm shell. Or something a bit bigger even.

The photo is on the UKAR Twitter feed if anyone is interested.

Angle of the pitot probe would suggest serious internal damage. Hope it's not too bad, don't have too many of those little red rascals left!

I don't agree with that map. As far as I'm concerned North is anything above Banbury. I'm not entirely at ease travelling that far up either.

With the pitot head that askew, I presume he was accompanied by another aircraft during landing.

Looking at the other photos it doesnt look like the pitot head is askew. I think its just the angle the photo was captured that makes it look that way.

As the only Northerner (Cheshire for BEagles benefit) on my Vulcan crew I can assure you that they reckoned that the North started at Watford! They were navigators etc. so knew about these things.

Regarding where the Saarf ends and 't Nawth begins, my rule of thumb is that a line between the mouth of the River Welland just south of Boston, across to Welshpool is roughly the border:

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a341/nw969/Nawth-Saarf_zpsd90700a1.jpg (http://s14.photobucket.com/user/nw969/media/Nawth-Saarf_zpsd90700a1.jpg.html)

North of that line the world turns grey and grim, with clogs, shawls, whippets and racing pigeons much in evidence, tha' naws - whereas south of the line it's the land of milk and honey....and lager shandy....innit?

Frankly the idea of leaving the comfort of Zone 2 to anywhere in any direction is enough to bring me out in shivers. Do you even know how much garlic, holy water and smallpox infested blankets I need to pack in order to survive a trip to Zone 3? :-)

Willard Whyte

North ... the world turns grey and grim,...

Like I said. Banbury.

I'm wary of Bicester too. Although that may be more down to Bicester itself.

Anything closer to the Pole Star than the Loire Valley is "north".

Now, here's proof of something I've always suspected. The picture in Coff's post clearly shows a Red Arrows pilot holding his remote control box, looking at his dented aeroplane. I just knew that's how they did it.

Bend the pitot back into line and speed tape the hole, job done... :ok:

North? You guys are not even close, we have places in Canada that no matter which way you face, its all South! As for the "Massive " bird strike, in fact its not as bad as many by any means, enough to get ones attention, but by no means "Massive", and much nicer than those which go into the engine intakes.

No your map cannot be right. Lincoln is not in the south as anyone who has been stationed at Waddington or Scampton will testify. Note the clever inclusion of aviation content!

Had a similar one when I was a stude at Valley. Hole in front fus / avionics door, and took out some wiring e.g. AHARS or whatever it's called? Half seagull ended up in the avionics area and other half down donk.

IIRC boroscope engine, temporary patch, QFI flew it back a few days later, CAT 3.

I'm not sure that pitot tube is bent, just telescopic lens affect?

I would not call it a "massive" bird strike ;)

You southerners have all got it wrong. As you drive north from London on the Great North Road, the A1, all signs say to the north. North of Grantham you are in the midlands. Signs still say to the north until you reach Scotch Corner. That is where the north begins. Leeds, Manchester, York, Sheffield are all in the midlands. The north begins at Scotch Corner!!

Probably it's arse, it's beak would have been first.

Ogre
9th Jul 2014, 09:44
If it was a head on collision then the arsehole would have been closely followed by the tail feathers

Might have been the beak, if it was overtaken by the 'awk.

That could take a while to fix. If it were just the skin it could be patched up and fixed properly over the winter. If the frames are damaged (and it looks like the next row of rivets have pulled out) then a new frame(s) will have to be fabricated. I guess they will be one smoker down for a while.
