View Full Version : A Sad Day for PPRuNe - Pop Up Adverts
twistedenginestarter 23rd May 2002, 04:58 Gents - please think again about putting these awful pop-ups on this revered site. And if your conscience doesn't run that far then please stop them popping back up every few seconds. It really is tacky
Alpha Leader 23rd May 2002, 05:51 Intersting observation - but I'm not getting any of pop-ups on my screen. Anything to do with the server one uses to log in with?
JB007 23rd May 2002, 05:51 But I guess it pays towards keeping it free for everyone...
PaddyOpants 23rd May 2002, 06:05 Very Very annoying.... is their a way of getting rid of it..
Alpha Leader 23rd May 2002, 06:13 OK, got it: these are not pop-up ads but banners and thus less intrusive.
I would agree that displaying an ad about an issue as contentious and intransparent as the IFALPA ban on CX (in one Fragrant Harbour thread there is a union member admitting he doesn't understand what the whole issue is about.....) is less than fortunate.
Bally Heck 23rd May 2002, 06:14 I would like to inform the pop-up advertisers that the irritation these pop-ups cause me is such that I will go out of my way NOT to buy the product concerned.
I appreciate however the requirement to finance pPRuNE.
Sad Sad Day :(
LTN man 23rd May 2002, 06:43 Keep getting a pop up for a mobile phone which keeps coming back no matter what I do. Really annoying.
Cpt. Underpants 23rd May 2002, 06:58 FREE!!
Go here (http://www.panicware.com/product_dpps.html) and look at POP-UP STOPPER ...it's free and it works.
Captain Underpants (http://www.scholastic.com/captainunderpants/home.htm) to the rescue!
packard merlin 23rd May 2002, 07:02 i agree with bally heck, very annoying, avoid buying:mad:
bought to you by the new airbus 340-600
BEagle 23rd May 2002, 07:16 I also keep getting a pop-up advert for a mobile phone or phone company - not sure which as I haven't bothered to read it. Nor will I ever read any pop-up adverts but will, in fact, make a conscious attempt not to buy anything shoved in front of my face in this manner. Please rethink this idea - the headline banners are one thing, these wretched pop-ups are something else!
coalface 23rd May 2002, 07:23 MAYDAY.......MAYDAY........MADAY
AAAAAAARGH KILL KILL KILL KILL.
I HATE POP UPS........THEY INSTANTLY PUT ME OFF ANY PRODUCT THEY ARE TRYING TO PROMOTE AND ALSO THE SITE ITSELF.
GET RID....GET RID......GET RID.
WORSE THAN DOOR TO DOOR SALESMEN.
KILL.......KILL....KILL
coalface 23rd May 2002, 07:32 Cancel mayday......cancel mayday.
I have just installed Pop-up Stopper.
Thank you to Cpt Underpants for saving my life.
Cpt. Underpants 23rd May 2002, 08:17 You're welcome. Now only if I could get rid of another virus (411A) just as easily...
Capt PPRuNe 23rd May 2002, 08:17 Errr... I do not allow pop-adverts on PPRuNe!
Are you sure it is from the PPRuNe web page that you are getting them? Are you using AOL or one of the 'nanny' ISP's to log on with? They sometimes force you to keep one of their windows open and who knows what they do in the background.
I use one advertising company for some banners but I definitely do not allow them to submit pop-ups. I detest pop-ups as much as the next person. I have never seen a pop-up ad whilst using PPRuNe and it would appear that only some of you are getting them which leads me to suspect that it is some other window you have open (although possibly reduced in size) that is causing you the grief.
Investigation continues.
deconehead 23rd May 2002, 08:22 Whooooooeeeeeeeeeeeee, well done Cpt. Underpants, no more pain with mobile phone or any other pop ups. Pop ups, your days are numbered:D
I am using AOL and once I logged out and back in again the damn thing came back to haunt me - Doh!
Danny, it's definitely a PPRuNe-related O2 (mobile phone) popup. Keeps appearing all the time :( :(
(I only have one IE window open - and I'm not connecting through an ISP)
DeepC 23rd May 2002, 08:47 So annoying!
Logged on yesterday - no problems
Logged on this morning. Same connection etc. - pop-ups appearing constantly.
The pop up window is titled www.pprune........thread=id....or forum=id..
In other words it is using the web page URL from PPRuNe.
Definetely a problem with PPRuNe.
Patagonia 23rd May 2002, 08:50 Pop-ups from O2 still def here this AM - I can hear my Pop-Up Stopper as previously recommended stomping away on them.
It's great!
:D
Fly747 23rd May 2002, 08:51 For your info Capt I too am getting the same mobile phone pop-up (O2). First time ever on pprune, must be something to do with your site as we all seem to be getting the same.
eyeinthesky 23rd May 2002, 09:06 Me too. And I'm fed up of being told that someone is cutting their toenails!!
steve1969 23rd May 2002, 09:14 I kept getting the same mobile phone pop-up as everyone else.
Definitely a pprune based issue!
Fortunately, the well-advised "Pop Up Stopper" freeware is keeping unwanted windows at bay!
beaver eager 23rd May 2002, 09:18 I'm getting it too, and it's definitely the only window open... Until the pop-up is running, of course (and it doen't stay running for long, obviously).
It amazes me that the companies paying for them find it cost effective, as I'm very strongly in the camp of those who would never ever buy anything from them. I try to avoid visiting the damn site even.
Bluejet 23rd May 2002, 09:19 Yep, even here via BTOpenworld ADSL. Its definately hanging off PPRUNE threads.
Bah..off to install the freeware.
skygazer 23rd May 2002, 09:39 The only window I have open at the moment is Pprune, I'm accessing the internet through the company LAN, and this bl***y pop-up advert for free text messages or whatever comes up every few seconds. I'm going to try the pop-up stopper download, if that doesn't work I won't be back. Don't mind banner ads, hate pop-ups!!!
stickyb 23rd May 2002, 09:42 Interesting. I haven't had a single pop up from pprune. Only adverts are in the banners.
skygazer 23rd May 2002, 09:45 The freeware worked!!!!! It's merrily flashing away in the system tray at the bottom of the screen - I disabled the sound to avoid irritating the rest of the office!:) :)
P.Pilcher 23rd May 2002, 09:49 Well, it wasn't there on the 22nd. and it has appeared today - every time I try to read a thread. It also appeared when I decided to write this. Like many others, PPrune is my home page - it's the first thing I want to read when I log on! As nothing else was opened when I logged on at 07.40 this morning and the dreaded O2 popup appeared, it is either coming from the Freeserve ISP or PPrune. From what everybody else has said it looks like it is PPrune and this annoyance it not helping Danny to keep the books straight.
Thanks Capt. Underpants, I shall be installing your recommendation shortly!
Captain Stable 23rd May 2002, 09:53 It's definitely coming from PPRuNe, Danny. It pops up every time you change pages (and not otherwise) and has as the window title the URL of whatever PPRuNe page you selected.
STATLER 23rd May 2002, 09:54 Yep, having the same problem, must be prune as i'm with bt openworld.
Excellent tip - pop-ups gone. Thanks for that.
choxon 23rd May 2002, 09:58 These popups drive me mad, and maybe even drive me off PPrune!
PLEASE REMOVE?:( :(
Ballast 23rd May 2002, 10:00 Looking into the source code of the popup it comes from oz.valueclick.com.
Looking at the javascript within the pprune page you also have references to
//--></SCRIPT> <SCRIPT LANGUAGE=Javascript src="http://oz.valueclick.com/jsmaster"></SCRIPT>
<SCRIPT LANGUAGE=JavaScript><!--
if (ValueLoaded) ValueShowAd();
//--></SCRIPT> <NOSCRIPT>
So it looks as if it is being kicked off by pprune somewhere down the line
Martin
GonvilleBromhead 23rd May 2002, 10:06 Bloody annoying.
coalface 23rd May 2002, 10:17 For Capt. Pprune's info, I am using plain old MS Internet Explorer 6.0 and was subjected to a mobile phone pop-up ad on every pprune page I selected. They are still trying to attack me but Pop-up stopper as recommended by Cpt underpants has stopped them. First started happening when I logged in this morning (circa 0530Z)
under_exposed 23rd May 2002, 10:18 Yep, every page change generates one.
The stopper did not work for me (locked down company machine). Hope they stop soon.
brabazon 23rd May 2002, 10:24 It's coming up on my screen to it's for O2 mobile phones - exceedingly annoying - may stop accessing PPRUNE if this continues...
120.4 23rd May 2002, 10:28 Is anybody else getting constant adverts for mobile phones each time you change a page on the forums? It is driving me crazy!! How do I turn them off??
If this is a new part of Pprune, I don't like it.
Point 4
Tom the Tenor 23rd May 2002, 10:34 Yes, have it too and it is maddening. Send up some Tornado F2s and some F-15s to take 'em out!
Richard Everest 23rd May 2002, 10:34 PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
mcdhu 23rd May 2002, 10:35 120.4, 'minimize them and it seems to keep them at bay - but I'm no IT expert. What a sad pain they are!
Cheers,
mcdhu
Richard Everest 23rd May 2002, 10:36 sorry, you beat me to it.
Konkordski 23rd May 2002, 10:39 If you go here (http://www.download.com) you can find free software such as Popup Killer. That'll fix 'em. :p
foxmoth 23rd May 2002, 10:50 Agree TOTALLY,
incredibly annoying and after the THIRD pop up there is NO WAY I would go near ANY product that is annoying me in this way.
foxmoth 23rd May 2002, 10:54 mcdhu - even minimising does not work - they just pop back up, the only thing apart from the suggested pop up killer is to move the box right into the corner of the screen out of the way.
heinzmanm 23rd May 2002, 10:57 Just to add to this, I use KillAd which works just fine and takes just seconds to download. Get it from www.download.com
GonvilleBromhead 23rd May 2002, 11:02 Ba$tard things seem to have stopped, not sure why, but thank Christ for that.
doggonetired 23rd May 2002, 11:09 Sad as it may seem, out of idle curiosity I read their usage policy
Quote: "Regrettably, there are occasions when individuals or groups of people exchange messages or involve in online activities, which are considered to be unacceptable by the Internet community. This is described by the generic term of "abuse". Although much unsolicited messages, particularly e-mail (SPAM), may just be a harmless but annoying way of advertising products or services, some can be as distressing as receiving malicious telephone calls. "
they seem to go to great lengths to decry the practices they use!
So here are a couple of ideas.
1) At an allotted time to be agreed as many people as possible should try to access their site thus forcing their server to fail,
2) E-mail them at abuse@<hidden>
with your opinions as to the worth and annoyance of their "tacky" advertising
:p
Smokie 23rd May 2002, 11:12 Heinzman, thanks, thats seemed to have solved the problem.
Happy Landings .
Smokie.:) :) :)
Avman 23rd May 2002, 11:16 Well I'm not getting them! And as for those of you arrogant wan#ers who have nothing better to suggest than it will stop you logging on to PPRuNe, bye-bye and good riddance. I'm sure Danny will look into it when he has the time. Please remember that he manages this site in his free time and for no personal gain.
They seem to be all gone now :)
Phoenix_X 23rd May 2002, 12:12 A very common problem with people getting popups is that they have commonname installed. This will open popups on any site, and especially now with IE6, had no real advantages. I would suggest anyone having commonname installed (if you're not sure, look in Control panel -> Add/remove programs), to remove it from your system. It'll stop 100s of popups.
FL310 23rd May 2002, 12:26 I am sure that there is a misunderstanding somewhere. I never ever saw any pop-up advertisement on PPRuNe.
A pop-up is actually an advertisement or announcement in a new browser window, mostly in a resized and much smaller window, frequently also programmed to stay open as long as the "main" window is visited.
What we have here on PPRuNe are simply advertisement banners, created as still pictures, animated gifs or even as a little Flash movie.
These banners may be as nasty as a new browser window as they can be programmed to contain spyware etc.
As already mentioned here on the thread earlier, there are means to avoid the banners coming up...AdAware and the one mentioned here as well as plenty of others may help. Using these "protective" measurements will on the other hand create error messages in IE as a script error is suspected due to the fact that a component of the webpage is not loaded.
So...if you see a pop-up (and this means a new browser window), it does not come from PPRuNe...
I am sure that there is a misunderstanding somewhere. I never ever saw any pop-up advertisement on PPRuNe.
Oh, you didn't - so we're all wrong...? ;)
They were there. They've gone...
DeepC 23rd May 2002, 12:57 FL310:
You write as if we haven't a clue what we are talking about. We are fully aware of what a pop-up is and what a banner is. Did it not cross your mind that PPRuNe this morning has around 40 messages decrying the 'Popups' it could safely be assumed that something out of the ordinary was happening?
The popups have now stopped but this does not mean that they were not there!
airmail 23rd May 2002, 13:16 Sorry to report that just before I saw this thread, I had a pop up ad for a credit card company (I think-I closed it down immediately).
Looks like it's not just O2:mad:
PPRuNe Towers 23rd May 2002, 13:17 They came, we saw, they were booted:D
Arrived entirely without our permission through a third party agency who do the ads at the bottom of the pages. We do the ones at the top. Delay due to dealing with timezones at the other side of the world.
Rob
SuperRanger 23rd May 2002, 13:48 Pop-ups??? No, I have not gotten any... I believe it could be from other sources rather than from Pprune.
SR
stickyb 23rd May 2002, 14:10 Certainly seems a bit strange.
I haven't (ever) had any pop ups from pprune, and I haven't got commonname installed.
I also haven't got any specific software installed to block them.
Will be interesting to know the reason
Tinstaafl 23rd May 2002, 15:44 I've never had any pop ups on PPRuNe.
Quite happy with the banner ads apart from those that have a fast image cycle. The others are relatively unobtrusive but their info. is available when I wish to follow up.
skygazer 23rd May 2002, 15:53 Answer was posted on another thread (Get rid of........) today - unauthorised advert apparently. The freeware worked, although slowed things down when I wasn't surfing (but it's easy to disable). Like most computer-related probs, it depends on your individual machine, software set-up, internet connection, etc. etc. etc. ............. Anyway, all seems OK now:D
FL310 23rd May 2002, 16:26 EVO...as I said, I never saw any of these pop-ups also, as it has been confirmed in the meantime, there have been some.
DeepC...if you follow the whole thread you will easily spot that there was some kind of confusion about banner ads and pop-ups. My posting was intended to give some clarification. If you feel personally attacked, than here my sincere apology also I do not see that I did anything wrong. Your sarcastic comment has on the other hand triggered my decision to retreat from further suggestions and recommendations.
gofer 23rd May 2002, 16:45 The solution is simple - subsidise the site. Then you could have paying PPRuNers with no banners and the cheapskates with -
Tell us boss - how much each if only say 20% would agree for the paying pro version (if it could be done).
Capt Pprune,
I’m running a program called AdSubtract Pro, in the 10 minutes since I read your message, this program shows that I have blocked 9 Ads and 9 Pop-Ups from Pprune.Org, together with 10 cookies from valueclick.com.
I haven’t actually seen the pop-ups as this program filters them out, but I’m using a Middle Eastern ISP, WinXP, IE6.0 and only have Pprune opened.
Hope that this helps.
Mutt.
paulo 23rd May 2002, 18:54 no pop ups here
Standard Win 2K IE 6.0 on default settings.
They've gone - see Danny's reply at:
http://www.pprune.org/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=54222
BEagle 23rd May 2002, 22:18 That said, I'll never go back to yamamoto, mmO2 or whatever b£oody stupid name some designer-stubbled w@<hidden> with a pony tail has dreamed up for BT Cellnet! They allowed their product to be advertised in this manner; notwithstanding the fact that their advert wasn't sanctioned on PPRuNe, they dreamt it up - hence they will now be known as those irritating to$$ers who annoyed loyal PPRuners. There are alternatives to Cellne...., I mean 'OhTwo' - I hope that everyone will use them from now on!
fobotcso 23rd May 2002, 23:23 Don't you just love it when BEagle loses his rag. Heaven help us when he lets fly and tells us what he really thinks!
But he's right, and it is amazing that there are some who are so intellectually challenged as to think they will get away with hijacking/piracy of a site like PPRuNe.
Towers,
i guess that it might have something to do with timezone differences, but in the last 10 minutes (0320 utc) I have blocked 15 ads, 1 animation and 11 pop-ups from Pprune.org...... This is according to Adsubtract.Pro.........
Cheers
Mutt.
Capt PPRuNe 24th May 2002, 19:31 The following statement was received from ValuClick today:
ValueClick pop-ups were appearing on the PPRuNe site on the morning of Thursday the 23rd May. There was a technical fault, which automatically linked one of the pop-ups for a campaign to certain banners. The pop-up should not have been linked to the banners. It is not our intention to serve pop-up campaigns to sites that do not wish to show them.
We were made aware of the problem through contact with some of our publishers at 09.45 GMT on Thursday. Our technical support team solved the problem by 10.10 GMT. Since then there have been no reports of this problem reoccurring and we have been monitoring our network for any problems.
The PPRuNe website has never requested pop-up banners from us and it is through no fault of theirs that this problem occurred. We are sorry for any inconvenience caused to both the PPRuNe website and to their users.
pilotbear 25th May 2002, 10:07 AOL is the worst isp you can get. It takes over your computer, rewrites the registry and is nearly impossible to remove. It prevents you using other software that it is in competition with and sends AOL information about you and your computer every time you log on (most of them do that in some form, that is why you get pop up ads). It is almost as bad as a virus.
maggioneato 25th May 2002, 21:39 :D Capt Underpants to the rescue. No more pop ups I hope. Must be an aol thing, Still got them even though I had put a stop on . The one on pprune for the mobile phone was a pain in the butt.
long final 6th June 2002, 21:35 Started getting them today - never had a problem before. Two just jumped up as I went to find this thread. Is it just me?
Regards
LF
