Due to topographical restrictions, we sometimes have trouble to get radio connection to the handheld radio (ICOM) on our airfield. We are looking into a nice and not-so-expensive (very small aeroclub) solution to get an external antenna. Any suggestion?

You probably need a centre fed dipole arrangement that radiates predominantly horizontally on as tall a mast as you can arrange.

Something like these (http://www.wingsandwheels.com/antenna_vhf_airband_gps_mobile_e.htm).

One of those placed on a piece of sheet steel around 44ins dia with the whip cut to approx 23ins...its even got the cable and plug,

The supplied whip is to short at 500mm...I'm sure if you ask them to cut it longer they will do it.

Nick.

This maybe better,
