About 80% of these diversions are medically related. Medical diversions seem to have been on the increase in recent years.

To be expected now that airline traffic is starting to increase.

Logically it makes sense, but as recently as 10 years ago, I don't recall there being so many as there seem to be now. I don't have statistics, but during my most recent spell in ops (about 2 yrs ago) we had one every 2/3 days.

We oldies are now many. We are living longer and travelling at much older ages then perhaps we used to. I guess this may partly contribute to an increase in medical related events.

As well as diversions there are a significant number of flights with "medical emergencies" which receive priority at their scheduled destinations. I don't know if such flights are recorded in any stats.

And yet another MON medic emergency, at least it wasn't by the DM this time :ugh:

The plane landed safely and paramedics were waiting on the runway for the passenger to be given treatment.
