Hi all opening this up for debate. I a currently flying on a station in South Australia. My understanding is that it is considered a private op as some managers are flying on PPLs and class 2 medicals. I hold a Casa CPL which I converted from a NZCAA CPL but my ppl did not convert under the Trans-Tasman Mutual Recognition Arrangement (TTMRA). There for do I need to hold a class 1 medical or can I let it lapse and just use my class 2. I will most likely renew my class 1 but just interested to hear peoples interpretation of the laws. And yes I have spoken to casa but was hard to get a clear answer out of them but I will try again closer to my class 1 expiring.

There's no need for "debate", and no need to "interpret" the laws.

Private operations may be flown by a CPL holder with a Class 1 medical.

If you do not hold a PPL, that's fine, you are still able to fly privately without one.

If you hold only a Class 2 medical, then you are unable to fly commercially, but Class 2 is still "appropriate" for your license held.

What they're getting at there, is a Class 3 medical is not appropriate for a pilot; that is for Air Traffic Controllers.

61.415 Limitations on exercise of privileges of pilot
licences—medical certificates: commercial,
multi-crew and air transport pilot licence holders
(1) The holder of a commercial pilot licence, multi-crew pilot
licence or air transport pilot licence is authorised to exercise
the privileges of the licence only if the holder also holds:
(a) a current class 1 medical certificate; or
(b) a medical exemption for the exercise of the privileges of
the licence.
(2) However, the holder of a commercial pilot licence or air
transport pilot licence is authorised to exercise the privileges of
the licence in an activity that would be authorised by a private
pilot licence if the holder also holds a current class 2 medical
certificate.
