Any news on the type that the F16 was up against?

Turkey shoots down Syrian plane it says violated air space (http://uk.reuters.com/article/2014/03/23/uk-syria-crisis-airplane-turkey-idUKBREA2M0B620140323)

....................Syria condemned what it called a "blatant aggression" and said the jet was pursuing rebel fighters inside Syria. It said the pilot had managed to eject before the plane crashed.

The Turkish general staff said one of its control centres detected two Syrian MIG-23s around 1 pm (1100 GMT) and warned them four times after they came close to the Turkish border.

One plane entered Turkish airspace at Yayladagi, east of the Kasab border crossing, it said. A Turkish F-16 fired a rocket at the Syrian jet and it crashed around 1,200 metres (1,300 yards) inside Syrian territory.

Authorities in Damascus say this week's Islamist rebel offensive around the Kasab border crossing marked a new escalation, accusing Turkey of firing tank and artillery shells into Syria to provide cover for the fighters. A source at Syria's foreign ministry called Turkey's actions "unprecedented and unjustified", state news agency SANA said...............

Assad's forces have already lost control of most border crossings with Turkey during the three-year civil war but had held on to Kasab, gateway to the coastal province of Latakia which has remained an Assad stronghold. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitoring group said heavy clashes continued for a third day around Kasab, where rebels have seized control of the border crossing but Assad's forces, who still control the nearby Kasab village, have been fighting back, supported by air power.

The British-based anti-Assad Observatory said rebels also launched another attack in Latakia on Sunday in the village of Solas, about 25 km (15 miles) south of Kasab...............

The Syrians couldn't have expected anything less TBH.
The Turks already know the Syrians will do the same, whether a Turkish jet is in Syrian airspace or just close to it.

He may have banged out, but I hope he landed the right side of their front, otherwise I wouldn't fancy his chances.

Pay back for the Turkish F-4 shoot down. Can't see how the Syrians can complain given they set the rules of the game.

Some interesting photos in the Daily Mail.

Not sure if they are of the actual incident even though the DM says they are.

I guess that's even for the RF4 in 2012.

If I remember there's been at least one Syrian helicopter brought down too during the current hostilities.

But wasn't that by the rebels ?

I think other aircraft have been shot down as well.

500N,

Correct the dramatic images used in the Daily Mail article have nothing to do with the incident.

Do these journalists ever check their sources?

These are simply old images of Falcons of Russia display team from MAKS-2007.
The Flogger images is footage of post deployment of air-to-ground rockets.

Nutloose,
Again ripped off old images. You can see the same image of the Flanker used in this article from 2012. Just the media being conned by people/groups passing the images off as genuine footage. In the Daily Mail article the images are labelled as Getty images. Look like some one made a nice little earner from Getty by selling them ripped off airshow footage?

UH, the initial news report was that a MiG-23 was shot down. What is with the pictures of these other aircraft? Was the original report a mistake?

Lone

I would say that the original report was correct - re type of aircraft shot down, but, in the rush of the 24/7 media, the following happened:-

1. As suggested above, someone conned someone into paying money for some good good looking photos and the DM fell for it because the journos don't cross check or know what they are writing about.

2. The DM grabbed some photos because they "look good" and are the type that give a "buy me" signal to someone.

In yesterday's Daily Telegraph, they ID'd a MiG 23 Flogger as a Turkish F-16. Cadets from my local ATC squadron to tell them the difference if they'd asked....
