Hi

I had a relative on flight UA101 from IAD to MAN last night. It was cancelled, but according to the map on flight aware this flight flew up to Gander before returning back to IAD.

My question is to why its been diverted, if anyone knows why, and why would it return back to IAD when flying so far in the first place, why not divert to a nearer airport.

If it wasn't a medical or technical problem requiring a landing ASAP, far better to head somewhere with engineers, spares, etc than to be AOG at some remote airport with no UAL presence.

It is also possible that it wasn't the same flight as the one you thought.

UA also use the same flight No for different routes operating on the same day. Usually these are what is probably best described as "semi-connecting" where an international flight lands at a hub and a couple of hours later, a completely different aircraft leaves the same hub on the same flight number, but for a third destination. The flight sections are not sold as continuous flights.
