Working at a Airport?

Hi,

I am just looking for some advice. I really want to work at Manchester Airport and I have been looking to see if they offer Apprenticeships. I would like to do anything be it baggage handling, ramp, etc. I am really interested in flight operations. I want to work outside on the ground. But the problem is I don't have any idea how to get into this field of work. I have been looking for help but not yet found any. I was hoping that some one could point me in the right direction. I am currently 18 and will be leaving 6th form in the summer.

Yes, I check that website regularly but I find that all of the jobs want past experience in the field.

For entry level jobs you would be best placed contacting the actual Handling Agents directly.

I'm not sure which ones are based at Manchester but it's good bet that there'll be Swissport/Servisair and Menzies so try checking them out.

Though you may find that you're a little late as they are likely to have filled their job vacancies with seasonal staff as we come up to Summer season.

Your best bet is through an agency. Try Premier Work Support, based in Voyager House at Manchester airport.

You won't get the cream of the crop, by a long way, but once you're in you hear about other positions much easier than you do if you're not currently working there.

I wouldn't even waste your time with a handling agent at MAN.

Minimum wage, no fixed hours, and you don't get paid during your training period (which may be a number of weeks/months).

Slave labour at best :rolleyes:

I suggest 2 routes:

1. Get ANY job at the airport and build up contacts to THE job you want.

2. Consider joining the RAF, as regular or reserve, as a flight ops assistant. You'll do ops jobs and air traffic towers - build up some experience, see a few bit of the world, drink beer and have fun in the middle. This isn't a guaranteed route to a civvy job outside, but it's a head start and can be fun in the mean time. :)

You need to apply straight away, I think now is around the time they start recruiting for the summer. MancMoose is right, once your in you find out about more job vacancies internally.

Any questions just ask, if you do opt for ground handling, I'd recommend going out on the ramp, but thats just my personal opinion!

Sorry TheSutt, been away for a few days.

I'm currently an aircraft cleaner. Started with this last year but, through hearing about a job whilst working there, I start on the ramp in the next couple of weeks.

Just get in there, doing ANYTHING, keep your nose clean, and within 6 months or so you'll be able to apply for positions that you REALLY want. :ok:

Found the job on Indeed.co.uk, applied through the website to the agency, and was taken on by Premier Work Support. Did 5 months on the agency, now taken on permanently by the major ground handling firm they placed me with. Prefer not to say who, sorry. That's just me! :oh:
