Noticed yesterday ARR to RW09...

I havent seen ARR on 09 very often.

Any ideas why using 09 for ARR/DEP yesterday afternoon? Testing the new ATC system?

Thanks

since when would wind direction dictate runway direction in australia??

where have you been flying the last 20 years??
:hmm:

actually, it was a light 4/5 kt southerly..

odd was ARR and DEP from 09...

werent using 16/34 at all...

just so you know, it is very unusual to use RW09 for anything as far as I have seen...

This may explain why.....A light NE blowing perfect autumn day.

Yes your right maggot, be nice to do in into wind landing in Australia one day.

There's a Runway 09?

I heard it was somewhere near RWY 27 but I still haven't seen it

If you head far enough down 27 you will see 60 in the windscreen, I think that's what Underfire is on about.

PS I seem to remember a British Airways (or was it BOAC in those days) VC10 raced past the 60 to have a look at kangaroo's beyond the bit that had 60 written on it in the early '70's. :p

I'm getting old :ok:

So the theory is if one arrives at the end of Runway 27 with ones wheels still on the Tarmac, one should take special note of the runway 60 markings before one suddenly arrives amongst the shrubbery adjacent to the end of said runway ....

If you saw RW60, yes, I would be concerned...

When was the last time you saw the LZ so clean?

so, it appears that no one can actually answer the question...

I would say the answer is quite simple. Easterly wind and it was Thursday.

What's wrong the suggestion already offered.. SE breeze!

09 does not get used often due to lack of high speed exit, lack of ILS, most arrivals come from the North East, terrain to the west/north west, unfavourable winds and wind shear across reserve with northerlies, all stars and sids generally aligned for departure climb to west and arrivals to the east....

I've used 09 a couple of times.

We've got a MH 777 with 239 POB missing in one of the worlds biggest mysteries and all you worry about is why is RWY 09 being used.

BECAUSE IT HAD TO BE.

43...that is what I recall, heavy on the SID's to the West....ARR to the East,
winds no different than usual..

They have been designing a bunch of new procedures for YMML, so actually, I was curious if they were putting them into use....

5qu14...thanks, finally

Stop the guessing. It's simple. Wind from the east. Maximum downwind permitted nominating a runway, 5 knots therefore 27 not available. Most Thursdays, one runway is closed for routine maintenance from mid morning to mid afternoon. 16/34 closed.

Like I said, the way the winds swirl around that airport, a light wind means nothing. Quite often, there is a hell of a crosswind at 16 arr, yet they dont go to 09 arr....

Bloggs, I was behind my fence, but no aircraft to measure!

(hence my question as to why)

Thanks for all of the witty replies about wind, but in reality, that response was wrong.

Now I am aware, that on Thursdays a runway is typically closed for maintenence, and now I can plan around that day...

It happens. I recently saw a Friendship from Hamilton dressed in orange and black land on 07.....oh wait, it might have actually been a few years ago

So on that note, In Essendon's heyday did any sizeable airliners actually land on the easterly runway?
Did the first Ansett and TAA 727's (VH-RMA and VH TJA) which arrived simultaneously at Essendon in 1964 from Seattle land to the east or west? There is some video floating around which I think shows them coming in to land to the east?

Found the video..it's between 5:45 and 6:45 in this:

The Aircraft & Colours of TAA - Part Two - YouTube (http://youtu.be/gs5yc2KktYk)

I think the residents of Keilor and Airport West would be howling louder than the JT8D's now if a 727 landed in that direction!
