Came across this interesting website the other day...

Index (http://www.planecrashzone.com/)

I can understand a lot of their arguments, but MB was opened in 1949, not to mention it would have taken a long time to construct. I'd expect residents would've been well aware of their surroundings...

Why move into an area, knowing an aerodrome is in close proximity if you don't feel safe?

Granted there have been a few incidents recently - but trying to convince the government to cease all flight training at MB is really pushing **** up hill.

Where do we/future pilots go? Avalon? Hmm. :ok:

ps. I love how they added this..
Moorabbin Airport is one of the busiest and noisiest airports in the Southern Hemisphere and it caters mostly for trainee pilots (predominantly from overseas)
Cause that's going to rally the troops.. 'you don't belong here'!! PLEASE.

Bringing a **** load to the local economy.

Take away the Asian students take away vital revenue.

And as stated why the fcuk buy property next to an airport? Oh that right it was cheap! Bogan.

Live with ya choices, how about a petition gets started to knock the houses down to make way for more aviation?????

The poor old "Safety" horse gets another flogging in the name of greed, self interest and the life style aspirations of real estate agents. Ably assisted by those who make the decisions on airport development (or lack thereof); Camden, Hoxton, Pelican, Bankstown, Archerfield, Essendon, etc. etc. RIP, but we do need more shopping malls, we really, really do.

In this era of the "Nanny State" why am I surprised to see this! General aviation has a fractured voice at best and is not seen by many as having economic or social value and is therefore headed for the scrap heap certainly around built up areas. The image of a plane crashing into a school is all that is needed to grab banner headlines. New facilities need to be developed outside of the expanded city areas on a different model to allow for less interference from the naysayers. A new GA airport has been approved in the Lockyer Valley 35 minutes driving time west of Brisbane and is located in an area that cannot be built out. Also offers freehold and keeps councils etc at bay.. Lockyer Valley Regional Airport (http://www.lockyervalleyairport.com.au)

The poor old "Safety" horse gets another floggingI see that a lot of motor vehicles these days end up parked in someone's bedroom/lounge room. On that basis these goons should be petitioning the banning of all motor vehicles, shouldn't they?

Here's a fun idea, someone should make a counter website that shows all the pictures of the many, many, MANY lives that have been saved by the various Pilots of organisations like RFDS, Careflight etc... many of whom have probably done their training in these places.

They might talk about MAYBE there being a crash that could hurt someone on the ground, we're talking about DEFINITELY saving a lot of lives every year through the General Aviation that comes out of such Airports.

Perhaps someone can go to the RFDS or Careflight and ask for the names of the people they have saved that year alone or for the last few decades, take that list to the person who runs this website and ask him to personally inform them all that he would rather not support the industry that saved them because of his own selfish, pathetic reasons.

"but we do need more shopping malls, we really, really do."

They already have a DFO there, because it is an airport !

My bother and his wife live nearby, admittedly just west so not on the flight path) and I used to live and pass by it regularly,
it is not that bad and doesn't seem to be an worse than in the past.

Right-you-are. That was the point of my post... saying that Moorabbin should be shut down is like when the peanut gallery whinge about how guns kill people.

Moorabbin is killing my finances. I did one landing (760 kg's) and it cost me $16.90 for the month with much of that cost "making up" the minimum monthly fee.

The petition is calling for end to circuits after 8pm.

Sure the airport has been there a long time but I don't see why it's necessary for gaggles of overseas students to conduct night circuit training over Melbourne after 8pm.

Plenty of regional areas could do with the business.

Agree. Give in to one thing and it will motivate them.

Plenty of regional areas could do with the business.

That is indeed correct, however therein lies a problem. International students generally don't want to be situated in remote areas, just like uni students in the major cities. They get the opposite of claustrophobia when you put them out in the country... but that being said, Mangalore does pretty well which is interesting. I'll bet they have a good set-up there under the covers, good food, entertainment or similar and a regular bus to Melbourne to keep them keen and feeling at home.

"but I don't see why it's necessary for gaggles of overseas students to conduct night circuit training over Melbourne after 8pm."

Because it needs to be dark to do night circuits. Last light tonight is 8:22pm, mid December it's around 9:10pm, mid-January it's approx. 9:15pm and mid-Feb it's around 8:45pm.

Now maybe you can see why it's necessary.

Reading their website, they demand

"An immediate cap on aircraft movements and then a 30% reduction to levels which existed before the airport was privatised"

The airport was privatised in '98, in 89' there were 396,000 aircraft movements. Now 274,000. Sounds like they have already got what theyre asking for....

Tell 'em they're dreaming.

I'm serious.

Developers looking for something to exploit are noticing plenty of empty green bits down there which are fogging their imagination with dollar bills. The obscene prices of Melbourne real estate are the cause of many problems including this one. The last thing we want is another glut of coffee shops to add to the nearby glut of coffee shops.

The privatisation of secondary airports was a grab for cash by the Federal Govt. Under the FAC these airports had some life and a controlling interest with an understanding of basic airport infrastructure. Generally, they were negotiable from my experience.

Enter the new owners. All deals cancelled or not renewed. Rents etc raised by sometimes stealth to so-called "market rates". Leases extinguished where possible and new more restrictive ones implemented. Costs go through the roof [bit like privatised electricity and water]. The carve up begins. Hoxton Park bulldozed and the airports become like ghost towns after rents just keep heading north at a rapid rate.

Hello these airports sit in the middle of an industrial zone and have a thousand or more acres o development land! BP truck stops/Bunnings/DFO/Schools/Concrete recycling/warehouses/car storage/heavy machinery sales yards etc etc etc appear while aviation disappears without a trace like the Mary Celeste...

Fight back by a united aviation industry????? Didn't and hasn't happened...Why??:(

What a corrupt farce.
I recall back in the early 80's applying for a flying school licence
and the then director invited me into his office,
complete with mini-golf set up, and while he putted a golf ball
around the office, he explained that in the very near future,
that Moorabbin would be shut down, due to all the complaints
of the neighbours and demand for real estate.

I did not buy it.

Anyhow, all the residents, past and present knew there was an airport
and all have a financial interest in getting rid of the airport to
increase the value of their own homes by not having an airport.

The Governments politicians would sell their own mothers into the
sex trade if they could and selling off any and every government
asset is another sign of the corrupt mentality that is driving
the far right of politics.

Now it's sell off the port of Melbourne, what's next,
sell off people at birth into slavery?

That is what is coming, the future generations will be slaves
to foreign owners one way or another absent
some common sense which seems to have been
also corruptly sold off.

Those residents around the MB airport will have to consider
the incredible increase in traffic if and when its all turned into high
rise apartments etc.

The current politicians keep looking for assets to sell and then lease back,
and if every one sold off their assets and leased it back, the entire country
would be bankrupt before the leases rant out.

I call em dead beat politicians.

Love the ATC response... "you turned a bit early there!"
