JAA CPL to FAA CPL

Hi everyone,

Repeated post, I know, I want to convert my JAA CPL to a FAA CPL, I'm Spanish btw

just 2 questions:

- Do I need to fly some hours to convert the PPL? Everyone is telling me I don't but a school told me I must

- Any school recommendations to do all the process? (Europe and/or America)

I have IR too but I don't want to convert at this time, too much money, you think I should convert the IR too? I just want to build some hours in the USA,

Hi Marc,

If you're just looking to build some hours in the States then convert the PPL to FAA, less hassel. I believe all you have to do is fill out the Airman application form and they will issue you an FAA PPL. To convert the CPL you will need to meet the requirements and pass the written / practical tests.

When you decide what school you want to go to, you will need to do a couple of hours with one of their Instructors on the machine before they can hire it out to you. Every school is different regarding what hours they will want you to fly with the Instructor first. All down to Insurance!

There is no conversion for CPL as such, you just do the normal CPL exams (written test, oral exam and checkride). Provided you fulfil all FAA hours requirements, you just need to do a couple of hours for preparation with a CFI. If you already have a CPL, then TSA clearance is not required (it is for IR however).


Getting a "based on" license is possible for a PPL/IR, this is just a paperwork exchange with the FAA without doing any flight tests (see Part 61.75). But keep in mind you are restricted to whatever you are allowed to do on your base license, i.e. if you don't have a valid R22 TR, then you cannot log PIC. Also, the license verification letter is usually only valid for 6 months, so you'd have to re-do the paperwork every time you go to the States.

btw, anyone knows where are the FAA licenses accepted? just in the USA?

About the PPL, I'm a little confused about it, some schools are telling me I don't need any flight hours to convert it, another ones are telling me I need to do 3 at least, I asume the first option it's a based on European license and the second one it's a non-based on ..

so if I want to try to find a job, which is the most interesting choice for me? Obtain a non-based PPL + CPL, so I can log PIC? Or the "based on" license will be ok?

You will NOT get a work visa if you are NOT a US citizen!

Any employer would have to prove that he can not find any US pilots to do the job before hiring you-nobody is going to do that (especially not for a low time pilot).

Not "impossible"-but not really realistic.

Play in the green card lottery-if you are lucky, you will get a green card in 2016/2017….

Marry an american girl-preferably a rich one…


Or keep applying-and maybe you will be the one among 10.000 that will be "sponsored"….

You are the one who wanted to get it. Remember having the license does not allow you to work here, just qualifies you if you were legal.

So anyone knows about working in South America? There're opportunities for low hours down there?
