View Full Version : Looking for a real outback strip in QLD

Hey everyone, first time post, hope someone can help!

I'm looking for an airstrip for a photoshoot... We'll be flying a photographer and a model out of YRED (Redcliffe, QLD) in a Baron and the photographer has a very specific criteria for the location.

They want it to look seriously remote, we're talking red sand, wind swept dunes and rusty old windmill type of stuff. Ideally with the aircraft in the shot but that isn't required. Main requirement is the red dirt, and no driving required from the strip.

Along your travels have you found any good strips that would fit the bill? The closer to Brisbane the better, and you get bonus points if it's got lights so we can stay for sunset...

Had almost a identical request when I first got my Cpl in the seventies
Took the paxs out near Bollon way by memory, red dirt but no sandhills
The boys at South West Air Charleville could help you
But there is nothing close to Brisbane with those requirements

I could name a few but you need to go out to the QLD border area to achieve what you want. Around Moomba in SA there are quite a few. Give Trevor Wright a call out at Wrightsair William Creek http://www.wrightsair.com.au/meet-wrightsair.aspx

If you go onto YouTube, and use the search term "close call emu" that's a place south of Charlleville that fits your bill. And you can look at it first via the magic of the Internet... I can supply more details if you like the look of it.

Let me know when you choose a location and advise the date and time of the shoot. I will be available to oversee the operation from a health and safety perspective ;)

Check your email. A lot more detail but these folk are the answer, and they could do with the visit!

Langwell Station 163 degrees 25 NM from Broken Hill.

Red sand, sand hills, scrub, great meals, and an incredible "tip" full of the most amazing things...cars, tractors, jeeps, traction engines and goodness knows what else.

I got bogged in my Auster in sand there and it took some help to get it out about 4 years ago.

Google "VH-BYM Langwell Station" for a photo.

Rhys,

A picture of the model would certainly help jog a few more memories....

or not.

Cherebah near Warwick. Agnes Waters. Or, come up this way & I'll put you into about 742 station strips that meet your criteria...... :}. Don't go to YCAB, too many bloody Roos!

Noccundra (YNCD) is the only one I've been too lately that sounds something like that.

It's relatively close to Brisbane, in the sense that it is in Queensland. :)

Hungerford, SW of Cunnamulla, might be suitable.

Rhys . .. . . . .. . tell your client he/she needs to revise the budget . .. . head out into the Red Centre . You do realise you can legally take-off at last light
without any airstrip lighting?

Twice the fun if you can tee up two of these for the photo shoot -

Caboolture! :E

I was going to post that, but thought it was Forkie's job, but you two ratbags are much the same.

We do not have a windmill or much red sand....but its a good idea. We do have a P51 :ok:

Thanks for the tips guys! There's some great potential out there near Hungerford etc. Enough to keep me googling anyway.

For those of you who are keeping those secret strips quiet... We're taking Jasmin here... Come oooooonnnnnnn... Spill the beans!

OP is looking for a "real outback strip" - not the crappiest strip! :E

The strip at the Centenary yards on Lake Nash gets my vote.

Way to many GA tumble weeds in Canberra

It would cost too much to land there, probably cost you to take a photo and you would probably have to pay royalties for any photo that is published.

I'm happy to do the flight for you low cost in a very high performance aircraft called a C152

Unfortunately there's only two seats, but it just so happens I'm all over Instagram and should be able to handle the shoot for you on my iPhone

Il be more than happy to hand over most of the shots...

Thanks for your help everyone, had lots of PM's and many many offers from pilots and 'assistants' haha. We've found our shoot location now and we're currently planning a date for the shoot. Thanks again!

Don't worry mate, there's a lurking intelligentsia behind the scenes reporting posts for being abusive, watch your language old mate & don't attempt humour that doesn't conform with aviating in the 50's.

Wouldn't take it too serious

Rhys McClintock

We're heading out to Hungerford after a tip from a regular, parking up next to the fence and walking the rest! Overflying a few smaller strips along the way to check suitability, if we find something before Hungerford we'll be dropping in!

I went to Hungerford years ago. We circled the pub to let the publican know to come out to collect us. His vehicle was somewhat unique - a 4 door Holden Kingswood ute. Didn't leave the factory that way though...

Fond memories of charters to Hungerford, Wanaaring, Ford's Bridge
and some other bywash. And Jack Crawford's place Budgerigah, out past Wanaaring. He'd been buzzed once too often as he'd always park the ute under a big tree after waving the indestructible young Bourke based pilots off.

Trips to many outback pubs with the Fesq and Company traveller in Red Mill Rum were also memorable. Charlie kept to a couple of samples in his valise along with his Colt 45.

Try Eulo. Hungerford airstrip fence may be locked.

Any of the Cooper Basin oil rig strips I used to fly into would probably suffice.
Trouble is that by now they would all be overgrown/blown over with driftsand or otherwise unusable.

Still have co-ords for most of them somewhere.

Doongmabulla about 100 nm. West of Clermont in Central QLD. middle of nowhere, we used to put a temporary wire fence around the aircraft when visiting, so the horses wouldn't eat it:ooh:

Buy a seat on a West Wing Aviation mail run ex Cairns or Mount Isa. You'll be fat for choice.
