Folks,

I just came across some article mentioning a project involving the Fokker F-28 as a COD (carrier on-board delivery) aircraft. I understand this was never actually tested but seriously considered.

Does anyone have any further info / involvement with this project ? My first question would be "why the F-28" ? It does not seem to have any outstanding STOL capabilities ?

Could it have been a typo, and they meant the F.27?

. . . a project involving the Fokker F-28 as a COD (carrier on-board delivery) aircraft.

Which Navy were they planning to sell it to?

Well I don't know about the F28, but I have flown the F70 and F100 which were for type certification purposes F28 derivatives. I could see that F70 being successfully adapted, it was a delightful aircraft and very easy to fly accurately. Whether or not it would actually be suitable for the role I have no idea.

I have also flown the DC9-10 and -30. Now, fun as they were I really can't imagine any of the 9s operating off a carrier. In fact that would be a task I would happily leave to someone else, but I wouldn't mind seeing the video!

I know this isn't a practical reply, but we used to have them as our main means of transport over here going north south. F$%k they could get up and go when they wanted to, pity about the noise though:p.

One of my most loved aircraft.

The F.28 Mk5000 with slatted wing had decent STOL performance. Fokker set up an office in the US to run this and other programs. There was some consideration of using F404s. But they never signed up a US partner, as far as I can recall, and the Navy never took it seriously.
