Hello everyone, as one of life's worriers I need some advice.

I have just renewed my Class 1 medical, but my BMI is over 35(although I'm on the way down,) and there is a requirement within 2 months to go through some hoops. I need to visit a cardiovascular surgeon for a tread mill test. This I'm doing on Friday.

I'm a keen dog walker so the 9 minutes doesn't put me off, but I have to supply my NHS number and doctors details. There isn't a problem with that, but why?

I also have to do a flight test within the 2 months, to prove I can operate the aircraft I've been flying for 9 years safely. I'm currently on winter leave and won't be flying until the middle of April so I'm not going to be able to provide this. Are the CAA flexible on this?

Any other advice apart from the rather unhelpful "get your arse down the gym and face out the larder" banter.

Regards in advance

Short term you have to do as you are told, although goodness only knows what a cardiovascular surgeon will do. Doubt they can even spell tread mill. I suspect you will be sent to a cardiologist but there again I see little point. I would suggest you have sleep studies and see an endocrinologist to rule out metabolic syndrome if indeed anything is of use medically.

In the longer term the proper advice, assuming you are not gorging unnecessarily on deep fried mars bars and the like is to consider a referral to a bariatric unit to see if a specific procedure would help you

Good luck

1. When any person is referred to any specialist in the UK it is pretty standard practice to record the individual's details, including the NHS number and the person's GP (even if the initial consultation is private, and the referral has come from elsewhere). Many a referral starts life as private because of perceived urgency, but later gravitates to the NHS for follow up as urgency declines and fees go the other way.

2. "Yes" is the answer to that question. Phone one of the AMA's at the Belgrano, and explain your situation. You will find them to be very helpful and accommodating.

3. I was then going to give the most obvious advice of all . . . . . but then I read your last sentence again , and I wouldn't want to be thought of as "unhelpful" ! Good luck ! :=

Thanks for all the replies.

1: Yes it is a cardiologist.

2: Deep fried mars bars are hard to avoid in the north east, but stotties are not much better!

Whey, aye ! Remember, too, that the local beverage ( Newcastle Broon Ale ! ) is absolutely brimming over with calories ! Canny, man ! :ok:
